Lol...good luck with that. hahahaha rusted bolts are always a pain in the ass. I had a guy in my Auto shop class once break a grade 8 bolt tighting up a crankshaft main...That ended in lots of four letter words...Funny as hell to watch.

ATF+4 i believe is the fluid of choice for that year. At least that is what I was always told to put in regular dodge trucks when I worked there.

taken from all data. need to know which transmission you have but here are the options. looks like the only fluid you can use is MMT or 75w-90 depending on which one is yours. i highly recommend not using anything other than oem fluid in transmissions. the 75-90 is a general gear lube, nothing special, but the other one is specific. good luck!:

Required lubricant for the NV3500 is Mopar(R) Manual Transmission Lubricant, P/N 4761526. This is the only lubricant to be used in NV3500 transmissions. No other lubricants are acceptable, or recommended.

Recommended lubricant for AX15 transmissions is Mopar(R) 75W-90, API Grade GL-5 gear lubricant, or equivalent.

Required lubricant for the NV1500 is Mopar(R) Manual Transmission Lubricant, P/N 4761526. This is the only lubricant to be used in NV1500 transmissions. No other lubricants are acceptable, or recommended. The NV1500 is available in 4-cyl. equipped 2WD models.

How do I know which tranny it has? There is nothing in the door sticker, glovebox sticker or the Haynes that says anything about which one.

              Its a 1999 3.9 V6 longbed 2wd truck

i believe that the nv1500 is in the 4 cyl only. and if the dealer told you that you need specific fluid, then you more likely than not need the chrysler specific fluid. if you are able to, drain out the fluid and see how thick it is. it should look like gear lube, but probably (at least hopefully) cleaner than used diff fluid. Your diffs build up more heat than your tranny which is why they smell burned most of the time. Manual tranny fluid is primarily just to lubricate the bearings and gears. Being a 2wd, there is no 90degree turn in the line of power like the diffs, which burns up the fluid even more.

long story short, call the parts dep at corwin and see which fluid they say you need.

Alrighty. Thanks a lot for the info guys. I finished up the exhaust manifold gasket but was only able to use 3 out of 4 bolts since the 4th one is behind some brake lines and I couldn't get to it with the drill. So far it seems to seal just fine and I've heat cycled it a few times. I also changed the oil and pull wire to the front for the interior topper lights. Apparently whoever put the topper on liked to use crimp connectors on the truck so the wire corroded and got left on the road somewhere. 15" of #14, a fuse holder and my soldering gun and I'm back in business.

I am going to hold off on the tranny fluid until later as I am sick of dealing with this thing. 😄 I ended up having to replace the drivers side hub assembly as it was siezed onto the spindle. We've got 3 of these dakotas and I've replaced half the hub assemblies in the last 2 months. It seems that this is a VERY common part to replace after 150k. 💣

I'll post up some pics of stuff cause I like stories with pictures.

unfortunately the hubs, ball joints, tie-rods, etc etc are extremely common on almost all trucks/suvs.
