the muffler may flow more/be less restrictive. but what good does it do to put that larger muffler on and then have to reduce it back to a smaller pipe to exit the muffler?

The exhaust can only flow as much as its smallest point. Behing big, is also not always the best thing. back pressure doess affect torque

U forgot the part where bigger piping isnt always better...it's exhaust velocity that's what matters not how big piping is, etc.

Reality is actually more complicated than that. It's an old classic, but if you haven't you might want to read "the scientific design of intake and exhaust". He discusses the reason why race exhaust tips were "megaphone" shaped, i.e. pipe size expansion can have an important positive effect on exhaust characteristics. I don't remember the specifics, but the take away i had from that book was that designing an effective exhaust system was quite difficult and required a reasonable understanding of fluid dynamics as well as some engine characteristic data that most people don't have handy.

Now in the specific case we're talking about here -- yeah, it's unlikely that putting a big fart can on a car will do anything but increase noise (my experience is with primarily BMWs, and you will almost never beat the stock system on a BMW except for saving weight, unless you've modified the engine otherwise such that the factory exhaust is no longer appropriate for the engine's state of tune). That said, it's strictly incorrect to say that putting a large diameter muffler on a smaller diameter exhaust cannot ever be beneficial.

Yeah, I like my can, my wicked sweet BOV, and my monsterous 18's...but I'm not a huge ricer like a lot of other people in Fargo. I know I said it already, and it does sound ricey, but I can't stand not hearing my exhaust. It's a guy thing Torbs...you wouldn't understand.
