Seriously thinking about a SRT-4.
-
Today me and my GF test drove a 2005 SRT-4. This was not our first time out in a SRT-4 because we had thought about getting a 2003 and drove a 2003. My GF currently owns a 2000 Neon which I abhor due to its lack or power. The only thing that is nice about it is that is does outperform my car in terms of MPG.
The car we drove today was like a Bronze color she called it a burnt orange but in reality the color really doesn't matter much to me. The exhaust tone from the car was beautiful IMO. I am hoping for something similar when I have SLS build my exhaust for the Talon.
The car felt a little more powerful than the 2003 model that I had previously driven. It felt about the same as my Talon as far as power goes but then I really didn't get to put it through its paces. Plus the car only had like 103 miles on it. The seats are really nice but I worry about long drive comfort. The interior seemed a little more distant than my Talon but it could have been how I was sitting.
The shifting on the car felt 3000X better than my Talon (obviously) because not only did it not grind but the throws were much shorter. I guess for the 2005 model they added a heavy-duty tranny. Anyone know how much difference there is in the Tranny?
Also trunk space is more than adequate for our needs so I was really pleased with that aspect. The wing is kind of ghey but I will deal with it. Other than that I really like this car and hope to be able to get it with my GF because it would be her car in place of her current Neon.
I wasn't able to get much detailed info on certain things like stock injector sizes, fuel pump size, and factory upgrade packages so I was wondering if you guys would know any more info?
Here are some questions that I have:
- How hard is this vehicle on your insurance?
- What things can you do to mod this car without voiding the warranty?
- What seems to be the hp that you gain from basic bolt-ons?
- Gas mileage?
- How is the factory radio? (Never got the chance to try it out)
- Is it worth it to go with the 2005 over the 2004?
If I think of some more I will add them as I think of them. I am currently planning on picking one up in the beginning of Summer.

Dude I was seriously thining about getting one too... but then I realized it was a neon.
A Neon that can walk away from my Talon stock. I dont much merit into the "It's just a Neon" statement. These cars are also very underrated when it comes to their power figures.

one thing I would very seriously consider before you purchase is how much value that car will lose as soon as you drive it off the lot... i would put some serious time thinking about a low mileage 2004. just my opinion
That's how I ended up with mine. Got a 2004 with low miles (2500) so I was like Great! Already broken in and purchased at a used price w/ a warranty still in tact. So I got it for like $4,000 or so from the MSRP price.
As for mods check into Stage 1/2/3.. I was told @ Corwin if they are dealer installed they would hold up on the warranty work. For me; insurance isn't bad $250 a mo. or so.
Only downsides of the car is small gas tank; 12.5 gallons and the fuel light comes on like when you have 3 gallons left. No cruise control (longer rides kinda suck) that's about it for downsides.
2004 is the LSD; 2005 didn't change up much...
Ya it's a neon (even though it doesn't say it anywhere on there) but my other option was a WRX; well 1) every1 and there mom drives a WRX 2) 2nd gear likes to break if you beat on it a little too hard cuz either they are going out or already have.
Gas mileage; roughly from Fargo to the Cities; but I'd reccomend a fill up 3/4 of the way for just in case reasons.
A lot of aspects I like about it.. Stock Autometer boost gauge. Etc.
But not too many of them in town.. Give it time and there will be a lot I am sure. -
Everybody and their sister has a neon

Aren't you able to get a better financing rate with a new car rather than a used car?
-
Not too sure; I went thru a Local bank... Made my payments a lot easier
It also depends on your credit/history on what type of interest rate you get. -
The thing is that we want to do a trade-in and that kind of cuts us down and where we can get the car from but I have found some 04's that were still on dealer lots.

I just got off the phone to my insurance agent the other day complaining that my insurance went up to $90/month for 2 vehicles (02 WRX & 99 Rav4) full coverage w/ 250 deductibles (I know, I'm old and married, but the most I ever paid was like $100/mo for my brand new neon in 96 when my driving record sucked and I was 21 and single) -
Right now it is about $800 for 6 months for my Talon and I only have one speeding ticket. Good student really helps out with the insurance. I dont think a SRT-4 would be much more than my Talon but hey I could be wrong.
