Timing
-
Can someone give me a lesson on timing? I just got back from the cities and got some new software. It allows me to 'tweak' my boost, timing, and fuel trim.
I just want to know the pros/cons of changing the timing to a more aggressive setting, and how much outside temp. affects it. Thanks

Timing is the fastest way to kill a motor, especially on pump gas.
A motor w/ a perfect AFR and too much timing will start to melt stuff.I would say leave the timing control alone unless you are on a dyno.

Timing ranges are pretty specific based on the motor as well. Certain setups will allow more timing and so on. I was pretty conservative with timing on my last tune with a max of 18 degrees @ 30 psi of boost. This was also on 110 octane.

Okay, I'm just going to have to count on the guys doing the tuning... they have worked on quite a few s4's around their area.
The dyno wasn't 'available' when I was there. The shop that has it moved just recently, and it wasn't ready to be used. I'm planning on making another trip up in the near future.

Hey - this is Brett, I use to have the Silver S4 - give me a call on my cell and I'll explain timing, boost, knock and octane to you. Too much to type out.
Or just search the 'net and you'll find it there. I think there's a site called "how it works" or somethingh like that, that has some good stuff on it.
Or read Corky Bell's book - that explains it too
