And ive found that every car ive ridden in stops sooner WITH ABS than mine which has none....thats odd. Although cars without ABS seem to stop better than mine as well, so maybe my cars just f'd up.

from what ive experienced.. i have to agree. my moms camry stops a whole lot better on ice than my talon does or my olds did without abs. i think it really depends on what car it is though. im sure each manufacturer has its own abs system.. so maybe some dont work as well as others.

From what I have been taught ABS was not designed to make you stop faster, it was designed to enable the driver to maintain control while braking. The driver can steer while braking hard versus locking all four wheels up and sliding out of control. Anyone with a classroom setting education wanna back that up?

good point, i would take it to court anyway, chances are the cop will let it be reduced, i got pulled over for street racing, and i actually was just acelerating to fast next to a wrx haha and the cop had no problem with reducig it to exhibition 216 doller less fine and 7 points less, so you have nothing to loose

or shift into neutral. Thats what my dad taught me.

My car has abs cant really say its a plus or minus. It wieghs 6200lbs and its awd. To me a heavy awd car stops better. Alot better then my 1g fwd dsm.

about an hour ago, i got into this little accident. the girl ahead of me slowed down to turn and i couldn't stop and i tried turning into the snowbank but i couldnt and i scraped the side of her back bumper barley. there is no marks on my car and she had a little white scrape. so the cops shouldnt of even been called but whatever. anyway i was nice to the cop, i apologized to the girl and the cop gave me a ticket for "failure to have a vehicle under control"!! when he gave it to me i said "you cant be serious, its icy as hell" and he said its icy everywhere. the tickets for $60 and im fucking pissed!!! how can i get a ticket for ice??? i wasnt speeding and i dont think he thought i was and i was driving my winter car which is a topaz so he couldnt of thought i was showing off or whatever. this is defintley goin to fuckin court but i dont know who to say besides that it was icy!! FUCK!!

I dont think you stand a chance in court. You will learn from this. Dont follow so close next time. It's winter you have to be extra careful while driving. I think Two cars lengths is good enuff stopping distance maybe three!

If you left 2-3 car lengths between you and the car infront. You would've had enuff time to stop.

What I was taught in a brakes class was the most stopping power happens just on the verge of lock-up, NOT during lock-up. ABS keeps the brakes on the verge of locking up, so it SHOULD reduce stopping distances.

Ahhh...but ABS doesn't keep it on the verge, it locks them up repeatedly during the braking process. It might just be that subaru, who have a notoriously sensitive ABS, don't benefit as much from their abs system as other vehicles do. I am relatively happy w/ the way that my Rav4 stops on ice w/ abs. For me, I unhook my subie's abs whenever I want to actually be able to stop my car on ice.

I'm going to have to disagree with you. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/anti-lock-brake2.htm

...the tire slows down at the same rate as the car, with the brakes keeping the tires very near the point at which they will start to lock up. This gives the system maximum braking power.

in theory, yes that is correct they will never get to the point of lockup. In practice it does not work that way....kinda like in theory a hummingbird cannot fly.
