Well my 2002 Trans Am Ram Air is off to its new home, so I decided to bust the 89 Anniversary TA out of storage. It has developed a handful of issues from the years its been sitting. Aside from rotting vacuum lines it runs pretty good.

My main issue is the boost problem, its over boosting bad. From a dead stop if you stomp on it it will roast the tires but almost instantly the boost gauge maxes out and the motor starts choking.

The way I have been driving it is at 1/3 to 1/2 throttle only, as it won't build more than 14lbs of boost at that. Goes like hell, but I miss the full throttle launches.

Anyone got any knowledge on this motor or want to try to help me figure it out?

tune it for all the boost and let it rip!

I would start by replacing all the vacuum lines. The ones that go to the turbo would be the first to do. Then I would make sure that your wastegate it hooked up. I would also think about getting a boost gauge to see how much boost it is actually producing compaired to stock level. You could also check to see if it the boost just keeps rising or if it maxes out at XXpsi.

Has to be a WG issue....

Does the car have an inline solenoid controlled by the ECU or does it just rely completely on the WG spring for boost control

If it is indeed overboosting the most obvious reasons would be either that... the WG is stuck closed, the vac line to the WG is cracked or unhooked, the WG diaphragm is blown/cracked, or if it has a control solenoid that it is not functioning or is stuck closed

put the new hoses on, get a manual boost controller and hook it up (compressor>boost vavle>wastegate) and get that boost down.* Every time it "chokes" like that you are greatly damaging that motor.* If you want it factory, find a new GM boost control solenoid, its located on the front of the pass valve cover.* also when replacing the vacuum hose take note of the Y in the hoses from the turbo to the boost solinoid.* It has a restirctor in one side that is specific so make sure its on correctly.* Once you get it down to 14psi where its supposed to be it should run pretty good.* If you have any more questions you can call me at 8047315691Gary

yes it will be for sale, I just need to get it sorted out from sitting so much. Need to get the boost problem worked out, the tranny is having a random issue (maybe sticking valve), switch back to the stock shocks because the KYB race ones my dad put on it are horrible, and get the wheels and tires that are supposed to be on it back on it.

I will call you if I have questions. I wish I could find a vacuum diagram too just to make sure its all connected right. I just want to get the boost figured out without chaing too much. Me and turbo's don't get along too well, I know very little aobu them and tuning.

Hopefully this link helps, the Y-fitting port with the restrictor goes to the compressor housing.
