It uses your computers idle CPU power to solve any number of distributed computer data... It runs in the background when your not using your CPU power, so if you leave it on all the time, may as well:

        About BOINC:

"Use the idle time on your computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux) to cure diseases, study global warming, discover pulsars, and do many other types of scientific research."

I've been running it off and on since 1999... http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/ and http://boinc.berkeley.edu/

        About Seti@Home Specifically:
"SETI@home is a scientific experiment that uses Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data. "

I remember hearing about something similar a few years ago but it was used in research to map the human genome.

As long as it doesn't slow my computer down I might look into it.

Sterling Archer: Oh my god! You killed a hooker!
              Cyril Figgis: Call girl!
Sterling Archer: No Cyril! When they're dead they're just hookers!

Yeah... and they did one for Anthrax after 9/11

Anyway, you can set it to be completely idle until your computer has no activity for x amount of minutes, or you can have it scale down to allow it to run but give other applications priority, or schedule it to run at night etc...

                Lots of options.
