wet sd harvest (stuck combine)
-
so we are just about done with harvesting soybeans , have only a couple hundred acres left, and we are fed up with it.
this happened thursday night and we didnt get it out until the next morning. for those of you who dont know (most of you) the tires on the front about about 6ft tall and they are 900mm wide. the flex head is in the highest position possible and is still stuck in the ground 6in. sorry for the shitty pics, all i had was my cell phone.

Dad trying to dig out in front of the tire so we can lay down railroad ties.
close up of the front left wheel
rear view to show what type of angle it sits
right side wheel sunk in about a foot
view from front
hydraulic cylinders that raise and lower head, sunk in the ground, and you can see where they bolt to the axle housing that is sunk 6in below the surface
reinforcements have arrived! my dads friend has a excavator that we used to dig out in front of the front tires and then pull from the front with a 100ft, 1in thick cable.
dug out and railroad ties in place and same on the other side but the picture was to large for me to transfer to my computer.
cable hooked up to front tow hooks that are underneath front axle
other end of cable hooked to bucket of excavator
let the pulling begin!the rest of the pictures that i took were to big to transfer to my computer so i cant show you the deep ass ruts that we left

seen the same thing yesterday on the way home from fargo on the casselton hiway

ha yeah no shit, about a foot under the surface, if you grab the dirt its like pudding, it just runs out through your fingers and you cant even make a ball of mud with it.
last night i buried the tractor and grain cart up to their axles, the from of the grain cart was literly sunk in the ground. and that was with only 274bu on it...

because there is no place to hook on to. you cant pull from the rear axle on these combines, they are to heavy and the the only only spot to hook onto is the tow hooks underneath the front axle and if you put a cable onto that and pull backwards, the cable with press up against the augers and other components underneath the belly of the combine. we did think about pulling from the rear axle but we called butler cat and asked them how much damage can the combine sustain if you rip the rear axle off. and they said they've seen 40k in damages from doing that.

what combine do you have?...if you look at the back of the cats, the only point where the axle connects to the rest of the combine is the pivot point. thats it. and if you start knocking around to where that pivot point is welded to the rest of the combine you can easily see why....not a good place to pull from

what incompetent engineer decided it would be a good idea to design a combine that did not have a solid pull point to the rear?
Oh, I know. The same moron engineers that make half of the parts on equipment nearly impossible to replace. Sure it's easy to get to on the computer you idiots...

we this combine is a little different, most of these combines were ordered with duals, and they an extra cross member on the front axle for the spacers of the duals. and that cross member had a point that you could pull from. but for some odd reason this combine was ordered with big singles and doesnt have that cross member to pull from. after this little incident we are going to be fabricating a bracket that bolts on to the front axle so we have the option to pull from the rear, beings that we will be getting stuck alot more this year

at the moment two 470's. but looks like we might be getting the two 595's sitting at butler... -

ha okay that makes sense. next year we are getting a 580r, we have no need for tracks as they are a 70k option and for 70k we are more than willing to pull it out with our cat challenger that we already have, or if need be our neighbors excavator.
btw the way how many acres you guys farm?
