TORRANCE, Calif. (AP) The American Honda Motor Co. on Tuesday issued a voluntary recall of nearly a half-million automatic transmission Honda and Acura models to repair ignition switch interlocks. The system, intended to prevent removal of the ignition key unless the shift lever is in the park position, may not be working properly, the company said in a statement.
The recall extends to about 486,000 vehicles, including some 1999 to 2002 Honda Accord models and all 1997 to 2001 Prelude models. Some 1999 and 2000 Acura TL sedans are also included in the recall.
Eleven incidents related to the defect have resulted in minor property damage, but no injuries have been reported, the company said.
American Honda said it would repair the defect for free at authorized dealers when parts become available. The company said it would post a list of affected vehicles on Acura and Honda Web sites starting Friday.
