would you guys say that a Kawasaki Ninja 250R is a good starter bike to ride for one summer then sell it the next year and buy a bigger bike? Im thinking that if I get into the reserves this year, ride the bike all summer, get to know it, get a feel for 2-wheels, then go through basic next year in the summer, come back with some cash (signup bonus) and buy a bigger bike after selling the 250R...I like the Ninja's, was thinking 650R as a later on bike...Im saving up cash from now till summer, then im going to see where I am and either, buy a bike, turbo the Z, or do both depending on what I have. I just want to know if a 250 is too weak, or is good enough. Any other bikes that would be good starter bikes?

    thanks

You could probably get an older carbed 600 for less than a newer 250. I started on an '88 Ninja 600 and loved it for a first street bike. Insurance would be alot cheaper on a 250 though, especially if you're younger.

      What is your budget?

Skip the 250 and get a 500, or an older 600. My first bike was/is a 2003 yzf600R, which I think is just perfect for me. Not too much power but enough to still have some fun and it handles great.

you dont learn by riding a slower bike you learn from not being a moron.

take me for example, first time ever riding i rode a gixxer 600 around my moms old complex. thought i was invisible, and layed it down pulling out onto the main road.

next summer, on a different gixxer 600. i wasnt paying attention on 45th, car cut me off and i locked up both wheels and layed it down. my fault. after learning i havent had a single issue since, and ive ridden a few different bikes in all categories.

a slower bike isnt going to teach you how to ride. if you not cofortable on a bike, then dont get one. if you want to start slow, get a pedal bike.

I'd say either start on an older 600 or even an SV650. You'll get waaaay to bored with a 250. Buy what you can afford now and just don't be a dumbass on it and you'll be fine.

My budget is up to 4K, seeing as thats how much a new 250R is, I want a bike this summer so I can get into it early and be comfortable with them.

You can get plenty for $4k. I'd suggest a Suzuki SV650. It's light, easy to ride, inexpensive, easy to modify, and they look pretty damn sweet. Plus the sound of a twin is awesome!

Get the 250. Get your feet wet. Zac has a point, but the 250 will be far more forgiving in the two situations where he laid down the bikes.

My vote is for the sv650, pretty good starter bike, comfortable, looks waayy better than the 250, and its enough bike that you wont want to sell it next summer......oh and it doesnt sound like a lawnmower like the 250.

Wooo SV650 FTW!! the only bad about the SV is that its torque as fuck. The bike is pretty retarded at picking up the front end at almost any speed. Once again get whatever you want, just don't be a stupid fuck on it.

Edit: On a side note my SV might be for sale this coming the spring, mint condish.............
