Defensive? You're one of the last people I would expect to get defensive, especially in a thread like this.

Not that it really matters since he won but what exactly does franken bring to the table that you don't think coleman did? Specific issues or stances you had problems with? This is a serious question, I'm interested in knowing why you voted for him.

LOL, MN is funny. I am from MN originally and we are idiots. I am liking ND more and more everyday. If franken was not a celebrity, Coleman would have won by a land slide. whatever, what can you do about it? we will just have to ride out the next few years.

MN was the only state that didn't go to Reagan in the '84 election. They're a bunch of loons, politically.

Colemans lost to a former pro wrestler

            a comedian

and he almost lost to a dead guy.

Why would I give that shitty politician my vote?

Elections and voting are supposed to be based on who or what you feel is best for your state and/or country. Normally people (if they are informed) vote for someone whose opinions and beliefs mirror theirs as much as possible...not whether a person is a comedian, pro wrestler, or anything like that. I guess that is almost more "proof" that my statement about the citizens of MN being "retards and idiots" is a true statement...they vote with little to no knowledge of where the person actually stands on certain issues, rather they vote based on an R or D next to a persons name or whether or not they like a guys wrestling moves or jokes.

Is it at all possible that MN residents voted out Coleman more so than they voted in Franken?

Originally senators (at the federal level) were not elected by popular vote. The governor of each state [and whatever other government officers may have been involved] nominated and decided upon who the senators would be entirely without public input.

This tended to strongly insulate the senate from issues of populism, which was important since the senate was to counterbalance the entirely populist slant of the house of representatives.

IOW, the house represents the people, the senate represents the state governments.

Since each state is allowed ot set its election rules how it likes, we have the situation today where all senators are popularly elected, just like house members are.

That is actually because of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution. Not by the choice of each state.

                            17th Amendment wrote:
The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures.

When vacancies happen in the representation of any State in the Senate, the executive authority of such State shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies: Provided, That the legislature of any State may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointments until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct.

This amendment shall not be so construed as to affect the election or term of any Senator chosen before it becomes valid as part of the Constitution.
