Anyone know how to fix an internet connection?
-
I am having a problem. My internet seems to be running really slow. I am supposed to be getting a 5 Mbps connection (I know that is an average). After calling Cable One (my provider), they claim it is my router. I have a Zoom cable modem running to a Linksys router (WRT54G). Here is what I am getting:
Speedtest.net:
2.05 Mb/s down
.3 Mb/s upCableone.net:
Local
5381 kbps down
325 kbps up
Remote
2860 kbps down
524 kbps upDoesn't it seem odd that through my router I can get 5381 local but then the remote is much less? Isn't that something in their own system that is slowing me down and not my router?
And no, I have not exceeded my bandwidth.

That's is not an 'average' that is a TOPS...at optimal conditions...with no one else on your line.
Paying for 5 Mbps and getting anywhere NEAR that is good for Cable One. Read your contract, bet ya it says the actual speed you get could be literally...whatever.
Cable One fucking blows.

Let me guess you live in an apartment? Get used to it. Stay up later to do your intensive use. Also, just so you know, after you've downloaded a certain amount of data between noon and midnight, they throttle you down to 1.5mb for the rest of the day. ALWAYS do your cableone downloading from midnight to noon, less people are on the line and it doesn't count against you. Yes cableone blows, but most companies are sadly like this.

But I completely agree with Tony.

The US has the shittiest internet connections and we're the ones who invented the damn thing. It doesn't really surprise me though, greedy corporate bastards.

Once they're fully established in our area we're switching over to them pronto. They're laying all the lines right now on our road so it's only a matter of time...

Oh wait! You can't!
I find that cable company internet providers tend to dick you around with ToS, bandwidth, etc, more than DSL companies do. I want a "We don't care what you do" attitude at the head end and no fucking with my connection more than i want ultimate burst speed, so I've used DSL for over 10 years.
In any case, I'd tell you to just start your own internet service company if you don't like the deals you can get from any of the current ones. But you can't, because the local providers have exclusivity agreements with the government. Your only recourse is to become the transport layer equivalent of an CLEC and hope the people that own the wires don't fuck you in obvious but hard to prove ways.
Greedy bastards only get good at it with the help of governments. There will always be greedy bastards, but if governments stop gaving them monopolies, easements, and so on, the bastards would never hold the same sway over your life as they currently do.
So the answer is: destroy government, whenever and whereever you can.
PS: if you want to completely get away from the local cable and telco monopolies, you can use wireless internet or VSAT based internet. But both are going to be way slower.
Speed. Freedom. Affordability.
Pick any two. -
I get that or better in West Fargo via midco.....just upgraded to DOCSIS 3 cable modem service. It pretty much pwns

So would you rather have internet that is censored?I'm sure it'll come to that eventually anyways.
Anyways, the point I was making was that internet service, from the country that invented it, shouldn't be as shitty as it is, with some exceptions(midco). Plus it's been around for what, 30 years or so, so you'd think a person should be able to get a decent connection without a lot hassle for a lot less than they do. But i guess the same formula works for ISPs as it does for medicine, it's more cost effective to treat it than to cure it.
And how the hell does midco go from West Fargo, skipping Fargo completely, to Moorhead? That's BS.
