I have a dvd/surround sound system that upconverts to 1080P. Would it be worth it to upgrade to Blu-ray? I'm not a HUGE audio/videophile, but if there's a huge difference, I might consider upgrading. I've never really been able to compare the two side by side.

A up-converter works kind of like a line doubler. It adds pixels and changes refresh rate to simulate a HD signal, An up-converter actually degrades the picture while making the movement in shows appear smoother. If you have a TV capable of 720 or 1080 HD Blu-ray Is the way to go.

Yep. I was skeptical, but I decided to take the plunge since I actually have a TV capable of taking advantage of it. Best decision I've made, other than the cost of the damn movies!

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!

Got both an Onkyo upscale and a PS3. The blu-ray is def better. Even on a 720p tv and of course a 1080.

Blu-ray beats upconverting handsdown, no question about it.

And help lower the price so it doesn't cost me $30 to buy a 10 year old movie.

everyone stop buying new discs (music and film) and boycott the market. seriously. why should we still be spending $15+ for an album that's 40 years old? with blu-ray, it's the early-adopter expense. with anything else, it's ridiculous.

Maybe a dumb question but if you play a regular dvd in a blu ray player will it upconvert it as best it can? Or will they not even play them?

Mine upconverts DVDs to 1080p. Most blu ray players will. But like everyone says, upconvert quality is still not as good as blu ray.

As far as paying too much, I've been noticing that new releases have been coming out at $20 (The Hangover, Star Trek, etc) and then will sometimes go up to $30 after the first week. You can also find really great deals on Amazon. They've had deals in the past where you can get something like 7 or 8 movies for $75. I also generally watch the Sunday ads to see what deals they have on blu rays. You can find $10 movies fairly easily. Just takes patience.

I think demand has gone way up. I tried finding The Hangover before Christmas and every single store in town was sold out. If Best Buy didn't get a shipment of them on Christmas Eve, I would have been out of luck. The stores have been underestimating blu ray demand. Plus players are getting a lot cheaper so a hell of a lot more people are buying them.

Yep, and I'm fairly certain a shitload of people were given plays for christmas because the bluray selection has been depleted every store I've tried to buy some at after Christmas.

I'll keep that in mind, $20 I can do for a new release, I spend that much on a DVD most of the time anyway.

the gouging prices is why i don't "buy" new films or music (i'm using "buy" like that because of what the dmca laws have done to our rights as consumers). if prices were more reasonable, i might consider buying something new
