Their product has been great so far, but my battery flaked out on me so I contacted them to get it replaced under warranty. Been dealing with a dipshit over there for 2 hours now....I told him exactly what i've done to see if it was something that can be corrected (ACPI driver, battery reconfigure, etc....) He made me do them all again....twice...only to say "Hmmm, seems like your battery is bad". We can sell you a new one.

Then I explained I was still under warranty....at which point he hands me over to his supervisor who tells me that I have to repeat all the above steps again before he can send me a new battery. 1 hour later I finally get him to send me a new battery, but not before I give them my CC info just in case I don't send the defective battery in....

    /end rant.

Yeah, I had one Gateway, hated their support, never had another one.

Dell's support is great, took me a few hurdles to really like dealing with them, but since then they have been more than accomodating.

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!

Never had a single pc or laptop fail under warranty so, I have no experience to draw from.

I own a Macbook and when my HD failed earlier this year they replaced it within 2 weeks free of charge even though the machine is now 3 years old. Great service from Apple when I've had to deal with them(rarely).

I had a Gateway a few years ago and they were terrible then to deal with, once I got through to a manager they took care of everything(screen was shot) but getting to the manager was horrendous. Ever since that I've either built my own desktop pc's and I've had my Macbook for everything but gaming.

Bring on the obligatory Apple flaming etc.

2 weeks? That's a long ass time, regardless of manufacture. When I've dealt with Dell in the past, they usually overnight the part and someone calls me the next morning to setup a time to come to where I'm at and install it.

HP for me. It also helps I work for an HP reseller haha. If I have an issue I place a phone call and the part is to me next day free of charge for 3 years since date of purchase on the notebook.

I buddy of mine bough an HP about a year ago and roughly five or six months after the HDD died, he got a new one from them with in week.
Now, less than a week ago, the replacement HDD that HP sent him died so he called customer support only to find out that he was ten days out of warranty and they wanted to charge $500+ (fucking ridiculous, right) for a 500gig HDD. Personally I think they should have sent out another for free seen as how the exact same thing went wrong and it was only ten days over on the warranty.
Anyways, he just went to Best Buy and paid $60-70 for new WD HDD, unfortunately though, after he reinstalled the MOBO took a shit.

Had a gateway, was good, til the hard drive went out... best buy replaced it with a dell, dropped it broke screen, sent it in, they had it for 5 weeks, got it back the screen was good but like the protective screen thing still had the scracks or creases in it, brought it back in and the guy at best buy just goes i'll give you one of the floor of your choice... now have a Lenova and like it so far... So when best buy has been shit with people, i've always had good help from them when regarding my computer...

I bought my Gateway laptop in 2003 at the Gateway store (when it was just south of Best Buy, so it's a few years old. 😛 I've replaced the battery twice and upgraded the ram. Other than that it's been flawless. Never had to deal with warantee.

I have a HP laptop, I have not been a big fan of it since day one.

Anyone got the disks or know how to reboot it(back to out of box settings)?

I've heard nothing but bad things about Gateway. A friend of mine had a Gateway laptop and got 3 bad pixels after 2 weeks. Then after a couple months the HD went out. Then a couple months after that, the keyboard stopped working. All the problems took at least two weeks to fix.

Dell has decent customer support once you get it through the idiot's head that you know exactly what is wrong and what you need. The HD died in my laptop just before the warranty was up, and I was on the phone for over an hour going through the BIOS and repeatedly taking out my DVD drive and putting it back in, all while telling him over and over that I just needed a new hard drive. I even held the phone up to the computer so he could listen to the loud clicking noise it was making instead of booting.

This was all at around 7:00 at night. The next morning at 11AM I had a brand new hard drive preloaded with XP and all the drivers at my door.

Other than the battery issue, I have zero complaints about the laptop. I also (in hindsight) realize that tech support was just trying to rule out any other problems....though making me go through it 3 times sucked....and the fact that the guy I was talking to was a non-english speaking person (Indian...dots, not feathers) I think a lot was lost in translation.

New battery should be here on Tuesday.

This. I think they have made a note on my account that I am more than capable of diagnosing my own issues. They usually offer to send "their" screwdriver etc with incase I feel like fixing it myself.

I tell everyone this, it doesn't matter what brand you get for the most part, just make sure you get a kick ass accidental warranty. It is pretty much worth its weight in gold after one incident. After all, you're only buy a guaranteed piece of shit.

Apple refused to honor the applecare 3yr warranty on my wife's ibook. The hard drive died. The guy at the apple store in minneapolis said that there was evidence of a spill, and so they weren't going to honor anything.

(We never spilled anything in that machine, and even if we did, a spill wouldn't cause a mechanical click-of-death failure in a vacuum sealed hard drive.)

                                        Fuck apple.

But how do you REALLY feel thrash 🙂

Gateway got the battery to me by Wednesday morning, which was when they told me it would be there. My only complaint was that the tech I talked to was a moron and wasted mine and his time. I understand trying things once (maybe twice, just to be sure) to trouble shoot....anyway, got it all figured out, computer runs great (like it has since day one...well, day one of Windows 7 anyway)
