I am in the Guard and I worked my ass off. 2 straight weeks of throwing sand bags. Everyone that was activated every year had a job to do, didnt matter if they were sitting in a humvee or building dikes, IT WAS THEIR JOB. if they were sitting in a humvee, its because they were told to. Unless you have been in a the military, you will have no idea what goes on. Im sorry that what you observed was negative, but you need to see the big picture. Too easy for you to sit and criticize.

Idk about anywhere else, but the only thing the troops did last year in my neighborhood was stand around at the end of the street and kick sand around. They would stop me EVERY single time because I had ND plates, and I would have to explain to the same idiot every time that my parents live in the neighborhood and I was helping them. There was old retired guys on rascal scooters doing more than the guys in uniform last year.(this is not an exaggeration)

          Really joel?

Yeah they did nothing at all, don't have them come back. Pretty sure i saw them kicking ass putting up hesco's and sand bagging.

Where do you get off saying they did nothing, when there no way in hell you saw EVERY military person doing there job. Do you understand that maybe they were not allowed to help you guys.

Was there not a plan to build a dike and let XX houses flood to save the rest of the town? Were you not on the "wrong" side of this dike?

Idk about you a kirk, but i'm more then glad they were here. You really don't understand what your saying.

It sucks joel that your parents house floods every year, but that is not the military's fault, and maybe just maybe you should build a damn earth dike. Instead of completely busting ass every year to hopefully not flood.

Exactly. Do what you are told and do not question 😉

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!

ok for ur information it was minnesota guard that was in moorehead and everybody that was in the north dakota guard was pulling no less than 12hr shifts and i was in a shop making sure that trucks were running and fixxing them when they broke down.... to say that we did nothing is the wrong fucking thing to say we busted our ass and if thats the gratitude we get then its that the type of people that apparently dont need our help... but to the rest of u gl with the flood

Yeah...I worked flood duty last year, will probably work it again this year. I definitely worked 12 hour shifts, and by the time we switched off and got back to the armory, it was more like a 14-16 hour shift. We were in the trucks because that was our assigned position. We had to make sure that people didn't get themselves into dangerous situations. Security=safety. See you all in the spring.

We didn't need anyhelp from the troops, or anyone other than family or close friends. I'm simply stating that the troops didn't directly help in flood fighting efforts in our neighborhood, so I really don't give a shit if there is 750 less of them.

An earth dike isn't the answer to our problems. A concrete wall is. We had it estimated at $27,000. My dad had it scheduled to be measured and everything, but then our house got put HIGH on the buyout list. We don't really want to spend 30k on a flood wall, and then get bought out the next year.

So to sum it up, I am Not saying the military does nothing to help the flood. I AM saying THEY DIDNT DO ANYTHING ON RIVERVIEW CIRCLE EXCEPT SIT IN THEIR HUMMERS AND BOTHER PEOPLE WHO WERE TRYING TO SAVE THEIR HOUSES.

Actually a quick search of public information says that your dad ASKED to be put on the buyout list....kinda sounds to me like not only does your family feel they NEED help from other sources...they are begging the government to give them money for a house that is valued at $0 due to the house being flooded so many times

And yes, I am on the sheyenne, but I did my research and while I will still have the trees/river/wildlife of being on a river lot...my house will never get wet. 🙂

EDITED DUE TO BEING IN A GOOD MOOD AND NOT WANTING TO BE AS MUCH OF A DICK AS MY ORIGINAL POST

My dad checked the "interested in a buy out" box. I don't see this as begging them for money? He bought on the river and understands the scope of what needs to be done to fight flood. The city wants to buy Every house in Moorhead that is on the the river that is not able to be saved by sandbags. We qualify, so why not? Again, please explain this "Begging theory" John, I'd like to know where you got this.

Also, where the fuck did you get the Idea that their house isn't worth anything? If youde do some more "public information searching you would see that it was appraised preflood 2008 for 198,000 dollars... The house has been flooded once, in 97, which is before we bought it. Mind you 99 percent of houses on the river in 97 were flooded, so that really doesn't matter anymore for prices of houses..

Checking the "interested in a buy out" box is different than "our house got put HIGH on the buyout list" (asking to be bought out vs. being told to get out). To me it sounds more like when approached about being bought out your parents said something along the lines of "sure, we're sick of this shit" (which is fine, I've been through the shit and if you don't want to fight any more then don't. Trust me I completely understand, I was living in grand forks in one of the hardest hit areas in 97. Just quit trying to be all e-cool about it, if they don't want to do it anymore that's fine).

As far your home's value I got it from the fact that appraisals are bullshit. Your "preflood 2008" value is just that....BEFORE THE FLOOD! Houses are not worth what an appraiser (government or private) tells you. Houses are worth what you can sell them for, and I guarantee that anyone looking for a house in the FM area right now doesn't have "high probability of flooding" on their wants list.

In 2001 my house was valued at $350,000 by tax appraisers. Shortly there after the owners died and the house was turned into a rental property. In 2007 the house was appraised at $225,000 (again tax). In 2008 the house was appraised at $178,000 (private) at the time of our purchase, I bought the house for $163,000 and I'm paying taxes on a home valued at $225,000. Which brings me to my point private appraisers said 178,000, government said $225,000, and I only paid $163,000. Therefore the house at the time of purchase wasn't worth $350,000, $225,000, or $178,000, it was only worth $163,000.

The theory of begging is related to the fact that as far as any person with a head on their shoulders is concerned the house has ZERO value due to where it is located, actually it would be a loss at this point. If the house is bought out by the government then you will be accepting a government handout along the lines of "we're sick of this shit, but no one will buy our house at this point so please mr. government give us some money for no reason...we were too stupid to do some research before we bought this house and now we want you to make up for that fact...oh and once you have wasted money due to our lack of forethought why don't you waste some more money to pay a crew to come level the place."

Now, I've said my point and I'm done with all the petty bullshit. Just quit trying to be Mr. I'm soo tough and cool and just be a regular guy, you'd be amazed at how many people would actually think that you are probably a decent guy deep down if you would just quit being a fucking dipshit.
