+1 on ubuntu if you're talking legally free.

There is no legal and/or non-destructive way to "Borrow" vista. You activate it with a key, that key is dead forever.

ubuntu linux desktop is pretty idiot proof.

Kind of unsure what you mean by "dead forever", it's not like you can never reactivate again.

On the other count thrash is correct, there is no legal way to do that with windows unless your computer has the code on it somewhere, in which case all you need is a disk and you can use that code to reinstall the OS. If it had Vista to begin with you should already have this unless you bought it from someone less than reputable.

By "dead" im assuming he means as in it cant be replicated, of course you can always reactive but it only gets used once at a time on one machine

There are many "not-quite-so-legal" ways to make Windows 7 work. I won't get into the details, because I would never condone such behavior of course, but if you are dead set on doing it it can be done.

What I mean is that product keys are a dumb thing to share -- you cannot really share them. It's dubious that someone that let you borrow a Vista Key would be able to reclaim and re-use it at some point in the future.

As far as non-legal ways of getting windows to work: there are plenty of options.

However, I'd be hesitant to run my business on software that I didn't have the legal authority to possess.

I agree. Fortunately for me I have a brother-in-law that works for Microsoft....Win 7 is pretty affordable that way.

been using it since the early beta days. IMHO the best OS that MS has released to date....all the cool flashy Vista options....but none of the bloat.

number of guys at work switched early and have nothing but rave reviews.

I'm sticking with my combination of Ubuntu and XP for now though.

7 is awesome. It's even cooler that I got 7 Pro 32 and 64 bit free from school. 🙂 Can you still activate the Ultimate RC version and use it for a while, or are they cutting it off completely at a certain date? My desktop is still running it and I've only got like 6 days left of the trial.

Ubuntu is nice and easy to use right out of the box, but if you want to do anything advanced at all really be prepared to learn quite a bit about the command line interface.

RC starts shutting down every hour March 1. I think full cutoff is in June or something. I'll be wiping it and going back to xp on that partition. I've got vista ultimate 64 and really have no reason to upgrade at the moment. Although I've so far thought 7 was great.

If you're looking for something free I'd highly recommend Linux Mint. It's based off of Ubuntu + a full multimedia suite. Very very slick system. I'm running my home media center on it... well was... need a new mobo and ps. Free parts ftl...
