Wheel painting tips

so i just bought a set of wheels and tires off an '84 fiero for my grand am to replace my steelies and hubcaps. They were only $20 so i figured why not i can get $20 or more out of my steelies once i get these on. The problem is one needs refinished preaty bad (see pics below). So i was wondering if anyone had any advice on painting them, more so preping them for paint. Im thinking about using a 3M automotive rust/finish stripper that you can get for a drill <u>Like so</u> and then hit it with some fine sand paper to smooth it out (i think i have 2000 grit). Once finished sanding smooth i would use a rustoleum self etching primmer then then either graphite or black rust-oleum wheel paint followed by rust-oleum clear wheel paint (all at manards in case you didn't know). I would also like some tips as to leave a chrome lip around the outside. If i tape it off before priming then just put clear over the bare metal lwill it give it a nice chrome/silver look to it or do i need to paint that with something. Thanks in advance for your help. so i had time to get one of the tires off today and looking at them more im thinking that the best way to get them preped would be to sand blast due to all of the small areas. Anyone know a place that can do this for me in the area. I live in PR but will be in the F-M are all winter for school so anywhere around therewould work the best. I thought i saw someones signature say that they do sandblasting with glass beads but im not sure if that was on this forum or not.

-Sand the shit out of those wheels.
-Stick note cards in between wheels and tires.
-Apply primer(2-3 coats)
-Apply paint(3-5 coats)
-Apply Clear coat.I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

Theres a guy here in Bemidji name Austin that doesn't bead blasting, he charged $30 for my intake manis and tb. I don't think he's on here, but if you go to the board on clubredline.net his user is chevy_ss.

im ditching the wheels they came with but is there a certain grit paper you suggest?

He had a guy in the club build him a complete head back 3" exhaust for the cost of parts. Thanks for the help.

i read through that whole thread and his work looks great....all the wheels he did look amazing....im going to have to contact this guy. I have a question though i stated it in the original post but i'll ask again. Do you know how i should go about getting a "chrome" lip? if i paint the whole tire then sand down the lip to bear metal then clear coat everything will that give me the look i want or should i spray silver wheel paint around the lip before i clear?

Painting it silver or something would probably give you that look. What you'd really want to do is probably polish the lip and then clear it, would look a lot shinier. I don't know though, I've never painted wheels so that advice is not from any type of experience on the subject. Good luck though.

i am debating on weather or not to buy a dremmel and i bet i could get a fairly good polish with one of those....
i started sanding yesterday with some 400 grit i had laying around and it was barely scraching it. So im doing a little searching to see if one of those paint and rust strippers that i posted earlier is what i want to use or if it will be too agressive and maybe take to much material off in one spot and less in another then screw up the balance....im going to pick up some 150 grit paper after i try a foam sanding sponge i have laying around.

well the sanding spunge worked, sort of untill all the sand came off and it became just a sponge. So im going to try a pressure washer i have at work to see if that will take the paint off faster. Im still open to suggestions to try if you think of anything that might work. The toughest part is that they have such a deep face and small areas to get sanded.
