Not true...I found my 92 Laser AWD 5-spd, perfect other than a bad VC. They were quoted a new tranny at over $3500 from the dealer. Sold the car to me for $500. 104k miles, perfect body and interior and it was fixed for free (I had a few VCs laying around).
My 91 FWD was $700 and near perfect.
Also had a 90 AWD 5-spd for $1500 and a 93 AWD Auto for $600 with a spun rod bearing, but mint.
They are out there. Look for timing belt victims. They are very cheap to fix and can usually had for $250-1000 in very good shape.

also, i found one (1990 TSI AWD 5-speed w/ removable moonroof) for $2000/obo in the cities, but idk if its condition is any good...it has some new parts and it has decent aftermarket rims with new tires. It was supposed to have the engine rebuilt 72k ago (172k on chassis)...the car is on carsoup.com...if anybody has seen this one before hit me up...or, if anybody is goin down to the cities in the near future and wants to take a look at it for me hit me up and let me know aight, thanks (i cant go there myself cuz i have no way of getting there).
