noisy acceleration
-
Hi,
Im not mechanically literate, but I have noticed that at lower RPMS my car has a very gritty and loud sounding acceleration (1800-3500). I was wondering what could be the problem and what steps I could take to determine the actual problem?
I have a 2002 rsx type S with around 160k miles on it. It has an injen cold air intake. I changed the air filter around 4000 miles ago(it still made that sound before changing the filter) and I regularly change the oil and filter with mobil synthetic every 3500-5000 miles.
I also have noticed a sizeable drop in mileage (360-380 miles versus 430 on highway) but this may be attributed to the age and wear on the engine?
again, im a newb so I apologize in advance if i sound...noobish.
thanks in advance

i should also add that the noise becomes more prominent when I give it more gas (I.E low rpm acceleration with full throttle makes louder sound than half throttle acceleration)

Any CELs?? Any change in top end power?? Check the cat if you have one.
-
no CEL and how can i check the cat? do i need to physically take it off the exhaust?

you can get the exhaust up to temp by cruising for a while and get out with your motor running and check to see if the pipe before the cat is glowwing (best done at night) and if it is then your cat may be clogged. another test is you can drill a hole in the exhaust before the cat and see if it runs better and if so mmost likely a clogged cat and get it changed and the hole welded shut.

Unscrew your precat o2 sensor and install a backpressure gauge. There is almost alwyas a factory spec for this. Please tell me you dont actually drill holes in shit your trying to diagnose???
If you had a bad cat youd more than likely throw a check engine light. Have you ever adjusted the valves on this car? Change where youve been getting your gas lately?

i havn't personally done it but i've heard of people doing it with success. It would be alot easier than pulling the o2 IMO. I've never had luck with those comming out very easily.I have never had a issue taking 02 sensors out. Its all about having right tools.

an impact wrench and o2 sockets aren't proper equipment? it was as stuborn as some of the people on here. Tried everything and we finally used a torch and got it out. Took about 2 hours just to pull the original and maybe 30 seconds to screw in the new one LOL

thanks for the replies, as far as the backpressure gauge, im not exactly sure where or what i need. The car has roughly 160k on it...could it just be the cat?
Ill check tonight if the catalytic converter is glowing after running it for a while tonight

Some people shouldnt be working on cars...
-
some people should remember back to when they first got into cars and quit saying things about others that applied to them at one point. Everyone has to start somewhere and not everyones parents were into cars so they weren't able to get the headstart at the age of 5. Most people have to wait untill they get a car of their own to start working and learning.
