chmod using ftp

I'm trying to chmod some files for a forum using ftp (tried smartftp and ws_ftp) and I can get in to check the permissions I want, but it won't save the settings. Keeps giving me the error "command not understood". Anyone got any ideas what else I can try?

Might be SOL if the FTP server has chmod disabled. One other thing to look at is the permissions of the folder you put the files in.

Yeah, it won't let me change permissions on folders either. Looks like I need to contact ISP and have chmod enabled?

try chmod a+rwx filename
or chmod 777 filename

what are the permissions on the file currently?

i kept farting around and I got the permissions on the files to change, but I can't get the folders to change. permissions on the folders are 000

edit I thought I got the permissions to change on the files, but they went back to 000 also.

hmm, that would probably be a problem. Can you rename the folder at all? Did you FTP that folder up?

Yes, I ftp'd the files up. It will allow me to change file names and folder names.
