I agree w/ chuck ....enclosure is a HUGE deal......and yeah...the newer rockford stuff is shitty like the punch stage 1, 2, and even the 3 is pretty bad.....but you can get the good stuff like the Power series...is great along with the power series amps...they are spendy but worth it.....
as for audiobahn i've heard some of their subs and some were shitty ..the low end..and some were damn good...the higher end....and i do have some of thier 6x9's the most expensive ones....400 watts max for a pair of audiobahn 6x9's is pretty damn impressive don't ya think....only bad thing is ..is that the damn magnet is so big that they dont fit in my eclipse!!!

but anyway.. to sum up this thread.. 99% of the time you get what you pay for when it comes to car audio.

if you want some cheap subs just go to walmart and get some of the pioneers, one of my friends has 1 12' pioneer from walmart and its loud as hell.
-
dual subs maybe cheap and farly loud but suck, had them in my GP and a dual deck deck started eating CD's at 2weeks old and after it was out for like a month dropped to a 1/3 of origanal price and bestbuy had one in stock. and in the summer the subs worked when they wanted to

ok, let me clarify a little bit....if all you want is something that makes noise, then something like rf or audiobahn or even the kicker square subs are what you are looking for. on the other hand if you want something that actually puts out anything that is concidered to be musical, then you should look for something like PG, Diamond Audio, or JL Audio (just naming a few off the top of my head). they can be had for the same price range.
the older audiobahn stuff is ok. and when i say older i mean before they started to mass produce and sell their shit on every website known to man. i had 2 od the older audiobahn amps and i had no problems with them, but i have had cheaper amps that were far supperior quality (that is why i say they are overpriced) and the same goes with their subs, i had 2 of the older subs, and they were ok (they did what i wanted them to do, and that was make noise) but i have had FAR superior subs for the same price. case in point all of my PG stuff and Diamond Audio stuff.
:end rant:

I have to disagree w/ 100% of everything you posted here. The older audiobahn stuff was crap, cheap PG ripoffs when they started. Back in the day they used to whore out to every website known to man. However now if you even TRY selling them at below MAP (Minimum advertised price) online the company will cut you off. Period. So any of the Audiobahn stuff you are seeing as "new" online for incredibly cheap is most likely not new but rather B-Stock/refurbished items. To prove my point, here is one really good example: 3 years ago I was able to source audiobahn from 2 or 3 different distributors regardless of where they or I were doing business. Now, in order to even sell audiobahn you need to have a ~$5000 opening order, have to sign an agreement that you won't sell new product online, have minimum quarterly sales objectives, have good customer support, have a product that actually makes good amplifiers (the older stuff was indeed crap....dunno how you got lucky on a good amp), and you have the backing of a company that goes after ebay sellers selling the product as new (they buy the products and shut down the supply to the dealer that is breaking the selling agreement...if they continue to get their supply, they shut down the manufacturers rep from selling the product....basically protecting their dealers). Like I said though, CES manufacturer of the year is pretty fucking impressive. For SQ try the Alum series of subs. Very good sounding when built with the right box for the right vehicle. Just putting a sub in any old enclosure usually doesn't result in good sound. Think of it this way, would you expect an F1 car to perform well w/ APC parts? Same thing here, a good enclosure will make ALL the difference in the way a sub sounds. I'll take audiobahn over a lot of manufacturers out there. Are they the best for every situation? ABSOLUTELY NOT. No sub is. Period. But they make 14 different series of subs. Yes, 14! Not 14 sizes or 4 series w/ 3-4 sizes in each. 14 different series of subs with at least 2 or 3 sizes available in each series.
I agree that they are very much a BOOM sub when you get to the REALLY expensive shit like the immortals. Those subs were designes w/ the SPL competitor in mind. Guys that need to be able to put several thousand watts to a sub at a time.
Again, I'm not saying they have the best product lineup ever, just that they have a way better lineup than you are presenting to this group.
BTW, JL, PG and Diamond make nice sounding subs, BUT I don't know if I'd rank any of them up there as the best sounding.
They are well behind Focal, USD, Morel, Dynaudio, Seas, Scanspeak, Skaaning, and Vifa when it comes to sound quality.
-
i never said that PG, Diamond, and JL were the BEST sounding subs out there, all i was saying is that they are very good for the money.
and yes if i had my dream system it would be focal Audium-TLR tweets, 1 maybe 2 focal 11" utopias, focal 5 1/4 mids, Mcintosh amps, and either a premier dex p9r and deq p9r, or an alpine f1 status deck and eq
-
not a bad choice.
I'd probably go Dynaudio D26 tweeters, D75 mids, Morel 7" midbasses and Skaaning subs in an aperiodic enclosure. Powered by linear power amps for the subs and Zapco for the mids/highs. All running off a Clarion DRZ9255 deck, being processed by Rane Equalizers and Crossovers.

 I have an aiwa cd player from best buy.

That was my second choice.

I just got done with my UBER cheapo system. I spent maybe $150 on it altogether. I bought some subs off of ebay for $50 (2 RF 12" XLC's), I had an amp laying around but I am guessing you could score one like it for less than $50 (Legacy BS 600W x 2), and I picked up a wiring kit from Wal-Mart for $15. The most expensice part was the box which I bought brand new from Circuit City because I have an account there and that was $70.
It sounds much better than the stock radio but it isn't the loudest thing on earth but it goes to show that you don't have to spend a lot of money in order to upgrade your sound.

I agree that Diamond Audio is one of the best for the money. I got 2 M5's in my F-150 being pushed by a Viper 600.1 and they are pretty loud for the money. I think I might add on another 600.1 so I can be hellaciously loud. 750 watts in each sub. PG is ok but i dont really like any of there subs since they got rid of the X Max.
I disagree that Audiobahn is shit i have an Aluminum 12 in my cavalier and its not really loud, it keeps me satisfied. but I dont want my car to rattle apart. My opinion is if you dont really care about sound quality, then the cheap subs will work for you, just dont put a really big amp on them, if you do you probably will blow so many of those you might as well have bought the more expensive subs and been able to enjoy the smooth sound.
I get wait to buy another car so i can start on another system. Maybe go with 3 Diamond audio TDX's and 2 Viper 2500.1 amps with some nice diamond audio 6.5 components.

-
Go get some 12 jl w3's they can bump and have damn good sound quality in my opinion
-
hum i am running 5.25" diamond audio m3 compnents and m3 10" with a jl 1200e amp. it works for me. as for audiobuan, I used to deal with the stuff on a day to day basis in a shop in gf that is no longer. this was about 3to4 years ago. IMO they had like five or six good items in thier intire linup. one of them being the alum12 . again this is my .02

Was this at Radioactive? I used to be there all the time.
