You really, really, do not want that to happen... If the government had full control, all it would take is some lobbying by some special interest tree hugging groups, and god knows what we would be paying for gas...
i suppose i should have prefaced it with something like "in an optimal existence"
the idea is, we consume far more oil per capita than any other country, so that gives us some clout. with said clout, we should be bullying our way into lower prices. the us govt knows that they can't let gas go up over $4 or $5/gallon because of the way the nation works. if costs did go up that high, there would be a much larger difference between the upper class and everyone else. why? the public transit isn't exactly great here, so almost everyone needs to drive. with gasoline at $6-10/gallon, there would be a MASSIVE recession, and our consumer driven economy would fall on it's face because no one would be able to buy anything anymore (very nearly anyway). i could spend more time on this, but i think chuck will get my back here; and if not, it will give you all something to keep you tossing and turning into the wee hours -

But like you said, all other things would have to be perfect as well for this to work. I really don't like the idea of an even bigger gov't. What we really need is one of the major gas suppliers to become the walmart of the oil industry....know EXACTLY what it costs to get the oil here and then demand that they sell at just barely above that mark...and then the next year demand that they sell for less.

Ya i heard that the stations dont get to choose prices exactly. It has to do with govt stuff. For instance i heard that it is illegal to sell gas say 30 cents under everyone else. dont ask why cuz the station owner would be the one losing money probably making in the long run. i remember when my sister who is almost 22 first got her license and gas was like 79 cents gallon. WTF happened. My mom said when she was my age and her first car she could fill it for less then what a 1/4 cost me in my 1st gen dsm. She had an old old school civic 2dr nicknamed "The Marshmellow" LOL

It is not illegal for a station to sell for $.30 less than everyone else. There was legislation on the table in ND to prevent Walmart from taking such measures but I don't believe it passed.
If your sister is 22 she got her license at most 8 years ago (1997) if in ND, and 6 years ago (1999) if in MN. I can assure you that gas prices were higher than $.79 at that point in time http://www.eia.doe.gov/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/wrgp/mogas_history.html has a bit more info (I don't have Excel on my PC right now or I'd post exact prices....I may be wrong.)
The lowest I can remember the price of gas being since the first Gulf War is $.89 on August 4, 2001....and that was a promotional deal in Sykeston, ND...Pepsi was sponsoring a temporary extremely cheap gas day on the day of my Bachelor Party. I believe the average price at that time was about $1.29. To be honest I don't really remember gas prices being below $1.00 (for any period of time) since about 91 or so.

sorry the selling for cheaper is just what i heard but wasnt sure about it and i thought gas was that cheap then. Maybe it just seems that much cheaper cuz it is somewhat high right now. Sorry for the incorrect info dude

I used to manage a gas station back in 97-99. I remember putting sub 1.00 prices up on the sign, I think I remember .89 being the lowest, but yeah, it was usually around 1.09 that summer if I remember right. I started driving in 95, and gas was around 1.10 to 1.15 then.
But anyways, about the comment about gas getting higher and the effect on the economy, well, I think there would be some changes to help absorb that cost.
First of all, I think companies will move away from the just-in-time inventory system they have in place now, and we would see a return to warehousing. After all, if it costs less to store inventory than to transport it more frequently, the cost accountants will insist on storing it.
Second of all, I think we would see a change in the way inventory is aquired, distributed, and transported. I bet local manufacturers would be used more frequently, and the price of goods from a distance would go up, making the scope of comparable goods increase from a price standpoint. Look at it this way. At the grocery store, corn would not increase too much in price at all, but oranges would. Instead of eating an orange, someone might decide to have corn instead (I know, terrible analogy). Furthermore, for the transportation of that good, the trucking distributors might be overlooked for, say, rail.
It is interesting to ponder what would happen if the prices were to remain this high or get higher for the long run. However, since there is so much uncertainty about it, companies are reluctant to change their distribution networks quite yet.

one of my mom's said that her friend went down to the cities and gas is 2.49/gallon but in St.Cloud there is a station that is selling gas for 1.59/gallon. YES 1.59/gallon. The guy said he is sick of stations rippin every one off so he is trying to help get gas prices down. he is only loosing 25 cents per gallon. Why do we have to pay fricken 3.00/gallon. No need to make a 1.25/gallon. Hope it works

Actually gas is not cheap by any means. Krzydrftr, someone lied to you. The gas stations aren't the ones that are ripping people off. Last year the gas stations were making about $.20 per gallon of gas, this year they are only making $.07 per gallon. My girlfriend works at a gas station and I was looking at the report from when they got their last shipment. And gas is $2.79 in the cities, not $2.49. And the guy in St. Cloud is selling E-85 for $1.59 a gallon.

they gouge on the premium. They pay the same for premium that they do for 87 octane, and they charge plenty more for it. It has been like this for quite a while.

Fleet farm does. as do many others.

My girlfriends cousin works at fleet farm I heard it from him personally. He even gets paid to swing by other gas stations before his shift to check their prices and lower theirs to be more competitive.
