i remember chuck that gas was under a dollar about the end of my 7th or 8th grade year...i read an article about how much people were gonna be traveling...and when i got my license in 2001 gas was right around 1.29-1.39

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!

I used to manage a gas station back in 97-99. I remember putting sub 1.00 prices up on the sign, I think I remember .89 being the lowest, but yeah, it was usually around 1.09 that summer if I remember right. I started driving in 95, and gas was around 1.10 to 1.15 then.

But anyways, about the comment about gas getting higher and the effect on the economy, well, I think there would be some changes to help absorb that cost.

First of all, I think companies will move away from the just-in-time inventory system they have in place now, and we would see a return to warehousing. After all, if it costs less to store inventory than to transport it more frequently, the cost accountants will insist on storing it.

Second of all, I think we would see a change in the way inventory is aquired, distributed, and transported. I bet local manufacturers would be used more frequently, and the price of goods from a distance would go up, making the scope of comparable goods increase from a price standpoint. Look at it this way. At the grocery store, corn would not increase too much in price at all, but oranges would. Instead of eating an orange, someone might decide to have corn instead (I know, terrible analogy). Furthermore, for the transportation of that good, the trucking distributors might be overlooked for, say, rail.

It is interesting to ponder what would happen if the prices were to remain this high or get higher for the long run. However, since there is so much uncertainty about it, companies are reluctant to change their distribution networks quite yet.

one of my mom's said that her friend went down to the cities and gas is 2.49/gallon but in St.Cloud there is a station that is selling gas for 1.59/gallon. YES 1.59/gallon. The guy said he is sick of stations rippin every one off so he is trying to help get gas prices down. he is only loosing 25 cents per gallon. Why do we have to pay fricken 3.00/gallon. No need to make a 1.25/gallon. Hope it works

In Newsweek not to long ago there was a chart showing gas prices with inflation...

It turned out to be a national average of $2.95 a gallon...

Actually gas is not cheap by any means. Krzydrftr, someone lied to you. The gas stations aren't the ones that are ripping people off. Last year the gas stations were making about $.20 per gallon of gas, this year they are only making $.07 per gallon. My girlfriend works at a gas station and I was looking at the report from when they got their last shipment. And gas is $2.79 in the cities, not $2.49. And the guy in St. Cloud is selling E-85 for $1.59 a gallon.

they gouge on the premium. They pay the same for premium that they do for 87 octane, and they charge plenty more for it. It has been like this for quite a while.

Based on the reciept from the shipping company, Jakes Tesoro on the corner of 13th and university is making $.07 on regular, $.09 on super, and $.11 on premium. And he doesn't pay the same for premium as he does for 87.

Doubtful, very very doubtful. It costs more to refine higher octane fuels. Guess what happens when it cost more to make something? It costs more when they sell it too...crazy concept I know.

My girlfriends cousin works at fleet farm I heard it from him personally. He even gets paid to swing by other gas stations before his shift to check their prices and lower theirs to be more competitive.

Does he work there and he heard this? Or does he do the book keeping and reads the receipts when the gas shipments come in? My girlfriend works at jakes tesoro, her boss that does the book keeping showed me the receipt.

Alright. Like I mentioned earlier in this thread, I used to manage a gas station. So obviously, my job was to do the "bookkeeping" after opening the place at 6 am, spend about 1-2 hours on the system for the previous days stuff, counting deposits, going through the shifts, blah blah blah, then slacking off for the rest of the day. I know that the price you pay for reg - premium differs, though there is some exceptions. For example, some suppliers charge the same for 87 and 89/90 octane. But the 91/92 octane will almost always cost more for the gas station. P.S. most Kane transport guys around here are dicks.

I too drove around when I made the deposits at the bank to see what others were charging, and I would match Holiday/Freedom/SA. No rocket science to it or anything.

An aquaintance that runs a small gas station, when I talked to him a week or so ago, he said he was trying to match Holiday down the road, and that was at like 2.79/gal. With what he pays for his merchant account fees (credit cards), he was losing money with each credit card sale on fuel unless they bought something else. Tough times for gas stations right now.

Some of this gas price stuff and the reasoning behind the prices gets kind of confusing. and that is what i was told. i guess it could be E-85. When that cenex by lunde got E-85 i didnt realize what it was on the sign and i say that it was like $.70 cheaper then reg. i was going to fill up but then i realized that it was E-85 so maybe they did the same thing.

the reason premium is .10 or even .20(in every other part of the country) cents more is because if they raise the price of premium they can lower the price of regular which most of the consumers buy...they can balance out the cost more while still having cheaper regular gas prices...am i correct?

that sounds like it would be correct to a point...but why should people who run the premium have to pay more so the regular can pay less? i run regular now but im sure my new car will run premium.
