Exhaust Ticket Response from Fargo PD
-
i cant believe he thought i was drinking.....this exhaust law is so dumb i asked them one legitimate question and they gave me the most unclear answer ive ever heard....i think if they plan on enforcing this law they need to make the law more clear instead of pulling people over for "loud exhaust" just because they THINK it's loud....and he said he could hear it from university but im pretty sure he was pretty close to us up until the airport

Here is the law, word for word:
8-0908. Mufflers required--Cutouts prohibited.--No person shall drive a motor vehicle on any street or highway unless such motor vehicle is equipped with a muffler, together with any necessary extensions, pipes or resonators, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive and unusual noise and annoying smoke. Such exhaust system shall operate to blend the exhaust noise into the over-all vehicle noise. No person shall use a Amuffler cutout@, Abypass@ or similar device on any motor vehicle upon the streets or highways in the city. The exhaust system shall not emit or produce a sharp, popping or cracking sound, nor shall it emit or produce loud or explosive noises.

dB level is a CARB regulation, not adopted by all other states. Some States/Counties/Cities have their own regulations regarding vehicle noise, but I cannot find one for fargo/cass county.
