for those of you who have lost your product key, had your administrator change your product key, or for some other reason that can't be discussed here have a copy of win xp that cannot be updated w/ security patches due to an invalid key, I have the solution to your problems here (I know some of you have probably done this already, just helping those that haven't)
- Go to either Windows Updates or Microsoft Updates.
- Install KB892130 (Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool)
- If the validation check doesn't pass, do the following.
- In IE, Tools > Manage Add-ons...
- Select Show: Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer
- Select Name: Windows Genuine Advantage
- Select Settings: Disable
- Click OK.
- Close IE.
- Go back to Windows Update or Microsoft Update and it should work.
Hope this works for you guys.

I update mine.....that means Im smart lol

I have been updating my laptop with an invalid xp pro version for awhile. You can actually update security patches(minor), you just can't download major programs, like IE 7. The last time I did this was about 3 weeks ago, I don't know if MS have change anything.

who updates windows? bah...I don't do all the updates, just the ones that I need/want and the security updates of course. For example, I needed .net framework 1.1, directx 9.0c, and a couple of other things on a machine I recently rebuilt.

i don't know that i would consider directx a windows update, but a universal set of drivers, a standard if you will. the .net framework... a windows component (similar to office) that is utilized by various programs. correct me if i'm wrong on any of ths stuff, i'm just going from memory

directx was developed by microsoft, there are plenty of distributable versions of it however it is harder to find beta versions w/o going direct to microsoft. I like to have the beta version as I try to beta test 2-4 games per year and many require that you have the beta versions.
.net was needed only for use of an auto mapping interface used in EQ2.

its a choice under the "Tools" tab of IE6
