X Box 360 shortages!
-
Microsoft used Boeing 747 freight planes to rush the machines to the United States from China. The Xbox will go on sale in Europe on December 2 and in Japan on December 10.
More than 200 customers waited in the rain outside the Best Buy store on Fifth Avenue in New York for a chance to buy one of the first Xboxes.
"Hardcore customers want the games right now," said Carlos Serrano, a store manager.
The Xbox is available in two versions: a basic model for US$299 and a US$399 version that has a hard drive and a wireless controller. The devices connect to digital cameras, portable music players and Windows PCs.
"We're just making these things as fast as we can," Gates said. "We think demand will continue to exceed supply for quite a while."
The Xbox 360 contains 1,700 separate parts and its release around the world in the space of three weeks leaves little room for error.
"For the last six months, we've been on the edge of our seats," Gates said. "I hope I don't get an e-mail saying `Gosh, processor yields are too low, or this plastic factory burned down in Malaysia, so we'll have boxes but no controllers'."
Manufacturers Flextronics International, Wistron and Celestica are building the machines.
"With software at least, the people who determine your fate all come to work here at Microsoft," Gates said.
Microsoft shares have fallen 16 percent over the past five years as sales of personal computers slowed.
Gates is betting the Xbox, Microsoft's only unprofitable unit last year, will help bolster other sales by Microsoft to consumers. The Xbox 360 will also be profitable over the life of the machine, unlike its predecessor, he said.
The Xbox is "absolutely one of their key growth strategies," said Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson in Portland, Oregon. "It's a Trojan horse to get a Microsoft product into the living room."

Xbox 360's going for 5000 and up on Ebay:

xbox was far supiorer over ps2 in every way it's just the games weren't cause they were almost all made to work on the ps2 the xbox and the slowest of them all the game cube so the xbox never really had the full power used... the new xbox360 is still top dog for the next year until the ps3 comes out ... sony is waiting so that this time they have the more powerful box (new tech = more power) but like chuck said the roll of the software will be made to work on both so why give a rates ass about which is more powerfull....
they are making a big fuss about the xbox being progressive scan widescreen ect but that's just idoits falling for that my plan xbox has been from day one... yes ebay today yet was averaging between 1200 to 1400 per xbox 360 but that is idiotic yet again even if you can't wait for the year and a half to 2 year mark for the price to be cut in half you sure arn't going to die waiting until after xmas if your not lucky on timing to get one before hand for $399
besides halo their is also PG, PG2 that are xbox only which is the best game if you like hanging out the rear end of the car for kudo's points also was the first to do this and not sure if any other car game does this yet and PG3 is out for the 360 (PG = Project Gotham)
and even with PS3 waiting for a year the hardware is going to be so close to each other your not going to notice a difference it's going to come down to which MAJOR company do you want to loose money on hardware sony or microsoft....
UNLESS you like online play cause the sony has NOTHING on xbox when comes to live play... microsoft has the experience with user interface to make everything the same for connecting with each game where i've seen and been told by play station people online play sucks because every game connects differently

Being the WESHOLE that i am, I walked right up to them and called them loosers and told them to get a fuckin life.
Ya know thats funny, I was there for 4 hours and actually got one of the x360's and not a single person ever said anything like you say you did. -

oh forgot to add

nobody even knows if blu-ray is going to be "the" standard yet...
HP, Dell, Sony, MGM, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, The Walt Disney Co. and Twentieth Century Fox support Blu-ray.
Microsoft, Intel, Universal Studios and Warner Bros. Studios have endorsed HD-DVD.
Lets see... Dell, HP and Sony VS Microsoft and Intel... Oh wait what do Dell and HP depend upon? yeah intel and microsoft, if they want to swing thier weight around they will get thier way on the standard.

UPDATE Hp Considers dropping Blu-Ray
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/79912/hp-gets-cold-feet-over-bluray.html
"We sat down with Microsoft to compare notes on the PC implementation of the various application layers," says Peterson. "Based on that discussion and technical reviews, we decided iHD is a must, if you will, for the PC implementation of next-generation optical discs."
The advantages to iHD, an XML-based format developed by Microsoft, Disney, and the DVD Forum, will more clearly benefit content producers more than consumers. For content producers, iHD will be easier to use for authoring and testing discs. For consumers, iHD will be integrated into Microsoft's Windows Vista OS, which will make playing an iHD-based disc easier than playing a disc using a different platform that would require installing third-party software.
-- So native support for HD-DVD in next version of windows...

so that makes the 360>ps3 how?

"I have to agree. I'm sure you all remember the issues with PS2 launch. Many launch day consoles have had issues in the past."
Seems like most people's are working fine though...

yeah was just goin to say, 360 doesnt have HD DVD until you edited. But by the looks, the gaming line up of ps3 will blow 360 out. even though from what ive read from other guys, theyre amazed with the 360.
meh, in the end we're all geeks.

my apologies....

I honestly don't see how any body can compare the 360 to the Ps3 yet since nobody here has even played a Ps3 yet. Hell, we gotta wait another year to find out unless sony decides to a worldwide launch instead of a staggered one like they have said. Yes I admit the 360 is very impressive, but like usual the Ps3 will survive the long haul and inevitably come out on top, as usual.
As far as the shortage goes, all hype, 360's where on ebay almost instantly after they went on sale selling in the $1000 range or more. Probably microsoft employees selling them to make even more money off the hype, and I enphasize HYPE. -
you were in fergus falls?
Yeah, me and a friend ate at Burger Time as fast as we could and then went straight to walmart to wait in line till midnight. Were you there too?
