General Garret turbo question

Garret turbos arent supposed to have shaft play if they are rebuilt are they? I know on mitsu turbos shaft play is bad. I am looking at a car with a garret 50 trim turbo that is supposedly rebuilt, but it has quite a bit of shaft play and the owner says garret's have shaft play. I don't believe him. Any input appreciated. Thanks.

You can measure the radial and axial play with a dial indicator and see if it passes Garrett specs. Generally there should be very little play.

agree with dave. is it freshly rebuilt or has it been ran. all of the turbos we get in new have like 0 shaft play. i havent got to "play" with one thats been rebuilt most of the stuff the people have just bought a new one

ok guys thanks, thats all i needed to know, this one probably has like 5mm of up and down shaft play, i will stay away from it, thanks alot
