Perhaps you need to research a term: Credible Information. this term implies that you can't just think of an idea (say that sports sales compensate for the cost of the sport) and make it fact. I believe you are now speaking from personal history. and i will agree that the current state of classrooms, these days, is rather poor. I will however say that in some schools they have begun to force higher levels of comprehension (similar to the school system of Japan) and have found much better results in "team building/social application" etc. I should reiterate that i do not think the US school system is up to par right now, i only argue that it could be done.

Schools were not meant to make us more mature, by definition they are meant to educate us.
I do agree that out of class activities do encourage personal growth, but I do not believe they should be funded out of the schools budget.

Well my research comes straight from the Moorhead Activites Office. My mom works there and has all of the information. So since the person who wrote the letter was comparing Fargo and not the whole United States, I would assume it would be close to Moorhead. With student activity fees that each player/participant is required to pay, ticket sales, concessions, playoff ticket sales they do cover the biggest sports in the school. You can think what you want and claim I do not have reliable sources, but I know what I am talking about. So all in all it is not only the tax payers dollars that are supporting the sports/activities after school and you can not deny that. Think what you want and cause drama, if it wasnt worth the money then why does 99% of the United States Schools have them. Just think about it.

Does it cover the dramatic increase in Liability insurance the city has to pay? does it cover the cost of purchasing and maintaining the facilities? I'm not being sarcastic or anything, i really want to know? Does your mom have this information? I think the information from your mom is the yearly fees the city has to pay (minus insurance costs), not the overall picture.

Yeah, I can get you a report if you really would like it. City expenses and School Expenses also would be classified in different categories. LIke I said before the bigger sports pay for themselves and the smaller ones do not. You may call it a debate, but you have to be so far in Left field to believe that our society should not have any extra activites because it costs money. Well therfore we should not have parks, stadiums, public assistance, etc......because they all cost money and do not benefit everyone.

Before I quit post whoring this thread i'll finish with this:

I loved playing sports for my highschool, it was great, but now that I am about a year from an education degree and i have seen the other side I have had to re-evaluate. I do believe that schools, in town and across the nation, put to much into sports for what the students get out of them. And i think they are what really matter.

When i played sports in school, the school was not responsible for injuries. Insurance was your own thing to worry about and you a liability waiver you had to sign. I only played sports in junior high, so have no clue on varsity athletics.

The MHS football stadium was paid for by an indivual not the city or tax money. At least i think a majority off it was. It probably happens elsewere also. And in the area the hockey games and team bring in lots of $$$. You see people all over the place with spuds hockey shirt, coats, ect. and same with other schools

I do agree on some of this. I think high school sports are not only a thing that benifits the players but the students as well. It gives them pride in thier school. But when certain teams are leaving the area(with 300 miles) multiple times in the year i think that is a waste.

Read my posts, I think activities are great and should be funded, but not if they take it out of the schools budget. I'm 100% with you on activities being good, i would never debate that.

97 jeep: Those liability waivers are not even close to air tight. These days (post mcdonalds coffee incident) there is no exemption from liability. Unfortunate but true.

I quit reading after page two, but here's MY take on it. While I'd love to agree with you that everyone should do it on their own time and on their own dime, that mentality is fundamentally flawed. Basically your thoughts are let the rich kids play in a structured environment and let the poor kids play in the park.

There are some serious costs involved in playing sports on any sort of competitive level. By being a part of the school sponsored sports (at least in my HS) you didn't have to pay for football pads, wrestling gear, basketball jerseys, etc... as they were paid for by sports boosters and ticket/concession sales. Aside from that even, there is an academic reason for having sports in that you have to maintain a certain gradepoint and/or social (by that I mean not smarting off to the teachers, etc..) standing within your classes to be eligible to play each week which helps push young athletes towards maintaining their academic standards (please, lets not get into the athletes get pushed through the system argument...it does happen sometimes, no doubt, but I'd say more exception than rule).

I find it funny that you think PE should be dropped from curriculum. Personally, I don't think there is enough of it. Too many kids don't do anything besides play video games, watch tv, download porn, etc... as it is. For many kids this is the only exercise they will get in a day (unfortunately).

Like most topics, I could argue forever on this, but I think you get my point.

As said before, in some cases with some schools sports do get put ahead of education. But, with many changes having being made to our education over the past, let's say, 15-20 years, education itself is put in front of sports. Hell, if a student wants to play sports today they have to do well in class or they can't play. Flunk class, No sports, it's that simple. It encourages them to do well in both fields. And gym class, although not my favorite (teacher was a serious asshole), was an easy credit, it was what I called a gimme class, pretty much show up and you pass, kinda like shop class.
Personally in my opinion the debate shouldn't be education vs. sports but sending billions overseas vs. education, you all know that story.

Well my .02.... The way i see it either your going to pay the schools or your going to pay the prison system... I just dont get how you can say that high school sports are not worth and or dont teach anything... I think if we made a list of everything high school activities has taught people it would be huge!! How many colleges look at those activities.. If it wasnt for some of those activities people would not get the chance to pursue further education. And gas has gone down lately....
