Chas F. Lien, Fargo, letter: School sports wastes money for education
**
Published Friday, September 01, 2006**With our property taxes getting higher every year and the schools still wanting more money, why is it that West Fargo played football in Bismarck, N.D., Fargo North played football in Dickinson, Shanley played football in Jamestown, N.D., and Fargo South played football in Minot, N.D.? With the high price of gasoline why can’t local teams play each other in Fargo and forget about travel?
Sports are one reason our schools need so much money. Sure our students need some exercise, but only a few students participate in competitive sports, which in my mind are a waste of money. The students can get their exercise with exercise programs in their own schools.
Schools should be for education and not used for entertainment of a few students and their parents.

F%$K yes!But i am gunna kick that person in the head. Are they stupid? Sports is what alot of kids look forward to school for. Especially Football. My brother hasnt stopped talking about how WF's varsity team is going to kick ass in Dickinson this weekend

Highschool sports are a waste of money that should have been spent on things that further the education of students. I love sports, I played HS sports, but I don't think a schoolboard should ever have to decide between New Curriculum material or away games/sports equipment. School is for educating minds not bodies.
If you want to play sports you should do so on your own time and your own dollar.
I don't even think gym should be a class.

Right, because there isn't a severe obesity problem in this country already:icon_scratch:If you played sports, you probably learned many things you can't learn in a math or history class....discipline, determination, teamwork. Learning is not limited only to curriculum. Do you agree that schools should cut funding for speech teams, choir, band, debate, and other non-classroom activities?

- obesity is not going to be cured by school sports.
2)You can learn all of these things in those classes if taught well and you are held to a high level of learning plus if you read my post, i say do these thing on your own time and dollar, just not on schools tab
3)Again no; if you want to learn to play a instrument, sing, speak, or just hang out with fat sexually frustrated men and women, do it on your own

Well now maybe you need to get a clue and lay off the drugs........first off gym class is there to promote fitness, nutritition, and staying in shape. They offer this from 1st grade on, so kids do not become fat asses, even though they are. Sports in general really do not cost that much of the schools money considering that football, hockey, baseketball, etc have a thing called TICKET SALES, CONCESSIONS, MERCHANDISE for home games. This thing called revenue offsets the costs and creates less expenses to play sports. Also, to make things fair. They should cancel debate, drama, science bowl and any other extra ciricular activity. I wonder what after school activities promote, Handoex already said in the earlier post. So in retrospect it also keeps kids out of trouble for the most part. Hopefully this paragraph can CLUE you in a little bit........

- gym class
- no, you really can't
- glad it worked for you
But really, is our educational system set up to teach information or to encourage growth? In my opinion, the fundamental basis behind our school systems is to help students grow into mature adults, which is encouraged by out of class activities like debate or football.

I think all the said classes/sports/electives should stay in the school system and should be an option for all who attend. There needs to be more $$ put forth for these very things. Noone here is in the wrong. The people funding this needs to get its priorities straight and stop cutting back on the funds for the schools. It's the very best investment in our future anyone could make.

haha. i love the dumbfucks who write this kind of shit.

Brian, i don't do drugs.
Perhaps you need to research a term: Credible Information. this term implies that you can't just think of an idea (say that sports sales compensate for the cost of the sport) and make it fact. On the other hand i can say: 96% of public schools in the US do not even come close to paying 50% of the activity cost to the school with ticket sales/concessions/fundrasing/alumni and have it be fact, because it was published after a Government survey of all public schools in the US was completed and compiled.
I will agree with you on the drama debate stuff though do it on your own time
Hando:
Gym class will not cure obesity, i would suggest that the best cure would be a knife and a wet/dry vacuum, otherwise i would suggest that the parents shape up, then force their kids to.
I believe you are now speaking from personal history. and i will agree that the current state of classrooms, these days, is rather poor. I will however say that in some schools they have begun to force higher levels of comprehension (similar to the school system of Japan) and have found much better results in "team building/social application" etc. I should reiterate that i do not think the US school system is up to par right now, i only argue that it could be done.Schools were not meant to make us more mature, by definition they are meant to educate us.
I do agree that out of class activities encourage personal growth, but I do not believe they should be funded out of the schools budget. -

I have read about studies where certain cities budget for the schools, and then budget for City sponsored activities ie: everything from football to flute playing;
and have found that more funding becomes available for both when people have a better idea of where their money is going. -
