Advice on a WRX
-
so ive been looking into buying a wrx for over a year now, but i havent been able to find one that i can really afford while going to school. about 2 weeks ago, i finally found an 02 wrx wagon in my price range. the only problem is, it has 136k miles.
i called the guy and he said that it was getting fixed because "at 100k miles youre supposed to replace the valves, but that never got done so at 136k they finally broke." im assuming he meant the timing belt broke and bent them. i finally called him again today to see if he got it back, and he said that it all got fixed, but now theres something wrong with the bottom end. he thinks it might be a bearing, but he doesnt want to put any more money into it so hes going to sell it as is. he said its driveable but it knocks really bad.
so my question is, would it be worth picking it up for $5,500? how easy/expensive would it be to have someone check it out and get it fixed?

I would say it depends on how cheaply you can find a long block and have it installed. But if he took that bad of care of it to damage the motor like that it makes me wonder how well he took care of the rest of the car. 5,500 is cheap I guess for a WRX, but still if you end up having to spend a good amount of cash to get it to a reliable point it's not worth it. I would stay clear of this car if you want an opinion. Sounds like the guy didn't know how to take care of it. Could also have transmission troubles waiting in the wings, suspension's shot, etc....

I have an extra EJ20 shortblock laying around, it does have a spun rod bearing (easy fix...relatively speaking) that I will sell for $200

is this the one from ambers auto sales????
if it is yeah the motors really bad, i tihnk its a theft recovery, i called him also and he said it at the shop so i called him a couple week later and i went up there, looked like there were some parts missing off the motor, he started itup for me, didnt sound to well so i just so no thanks. but overrall the body was in pretty good condition, and so was the interior. might be worth 5500 -
if it were me i would buy it, you can always part it out for more.... i have a 2.0 block with 55,000 miles on it. it had perfect compression when i yanked it out.... make an offer on it if you are interested, i just want to get it out of my shop. and also if you need someone to help you work on it if you do decide to purchase it dont be afraid to pm me. harvest season is done and i got jack shit to do now....
