I have a Toshiba satellite and has been very good to, zero problems since new a year ago. Best Buy screwed up on the price they had on the display model so they had to sell at that price, but it was a good price before that.

Do NOT buy a Gateway and try not to buy from Best Buy if at all possible.

Definately no gateway, and like CMK said, try to stay away from Best Buy. Here's my recommendation: Buy a Dell with the best warranty. Here's why: No matter who you buy from, anything can happen. When you buy a warranty, atleast you know that your shit is going to be fixed no questions asked. My Dell warranty is top notch. I have accidental coverage and overnight repair. I email them that I need something, they email me back saying that a part will be shipped out and someone will call me tomorrow to fix it, or if I want, I just do it myself. The warranty has come in handy A LOT. After all, you're only buying a guaranteed piece of shit...

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!

              dell.

I have had a gateway, toshiba, dell, compaq, and a couple others.

I would have to say go with dell for the warrenty and the price is not that bad.

However, dell desktops suck the big cock. (dont waste ur money on one lol)

              but ya... dell laptop ftw.

My reasoning for not buying from Best Buy is that you will have to fight to get anything taken care of if you should get their PSP. I bought my laptop a year and a half ago and have been fighting for the last 6 months to get it repaired under the PSP. Normally I wouldn't buy the service plans, but I was an employee at the time and got a pretty good deal. The Gateway fucking blows BTW, their build quality sucks and it will break on you. Sometime I might sit down and write out my whole Best Buy ordeal when its all said and done.

Do not get a Mac...they are shit
the only reason people buy them is beacuse they complain that "their PC breaks on them blah blah" but its not the PC's fault its the idiots crashing them. Macbook users=retards.

I have not had problems with bestbuy. I actually had a computer replaced with a differant one cause of problems, they didnt even question it and were like you can pic any laptop up to 1500.

I have had 3 latops. A Compaq back like 4years ago, had nothing but problems. A HP no problems, just stupid viruses. I now have a Toshiba.

Werd, ever since Gateway lost their ass and started selling mainstream to Best Buy they have been TERRIBLE! Back in the day I woulda easily bought a Gateway vs. Dell...

Macs are the single best thing you can buy if your not a heavy gamer and dont write programs. Period. There is nothing a PC can do that a Mac wont simplify.

Here. Read this http://www.gen-x-pc.com/laptopmanu.htm THEN make your decision. Usually, you are paying for customer service and reputation. I do agree with Dell being a good choice if nothing else, because of their warranty and customer service. But as far as build quality, there is alot of things shared across the board. You ultimately get what you pay for. Other than a HD failure, my Compaq has been great and have absolutely no quams about it.

Anyone know anything about the "new" think pads, they were all I used for about 8? some odd years. I can testify the older ones build quality were top notch before IBM was sold to Lenovo. a much more solid build, compared to my new dell, which was replaced by dell as the first one had a mess of problems, the first week of ownership.

I would think that making something more simple to use, and with fewer problems, is actually a step forward.

I am more than capable with a PC, and I use one for certain things. When it came to buy a new laptop, I chose Mac because it would simplify my life and still perform to my standards.

I would say a mac isn't for you, but probably better for the general public than a PC

definitely get a dell. their customer service is second to none and they're fairly cheap as well. if youre really concerned with graphics and gaming, get an xps system. they start at like $999.99 or so. you can then customize it to whatever you want. i went the cheaper route and went with an inspiron e1505 and customized the shit out of it and im VERY satisfied with it. this thing plays games way better than my 2 year old gaming desktop. the only thing bad about inspirons is that if you open up two of the exact same model, you can have all different brand parts. thats how dell keeps their prices so low.

whatever you do, get the longest warranty you can that covers the most you can. theres always a good chance that some day in the future youll be carrying it around and something will happen to it. in my experience with dell, its almost a 'no questions asked' kind of policy. it breaks, you call them, they send someone out to pick it up and they fix it fast.

Except for the whole "hala dirka dirka" you have to answer to first in their customer support. Although I must say, the guy I talked to when I called to cancel my 30 day call in support for $50 was really cool/nice and though I did have some trouble understanding some of what he said, it wasn't that big of a deal and he transfered me to someone who was able to cancel it. I'd recommend a Dell. Also if you're a student at a local university you get a discount too, I spent $1100 on a laptop that would have cost me close to $1900 before discounts, well worth it IMO.
