according to the DSM model guide the laser IS part of the Chrysler/Mitsu joint venture yet they list the 1G laser as 1990-1991, but the history shown below says the eclipse and lasers were first produced in 1988...WTF?

chrysler laser, ah yeah, found that on the net. That would make the Chrysler Laser and Dodge Daytona sibling cars...

they were made in 1988 as 89 models...they were originally made to take over the racing for the chrysler conquest

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!

It's powered by a 2.5L Turbo SOHC Mopar. It's running an automatic 3-spd. This is the same automatic that Mike Crawford runs in his 8-sec Neon. This same guy also has a low 13-sec minivan. Another guy in Illinois has a wood-sided minvan that runs 12.6x (I have all the vids). And yet another guy has a high 11-sec Plymouth Acclaim 4-dr. There are tons of quick old-school turbo Mopars. Problem is....they are limited in their power due to rpms. Anything over 7000rpm and they come apart. No matter what parts you use. Fun cars but, do take a little money to get quick. Hampered by notchy 5-spd trannies, slow-shifting autos, lack of high rpm flow and reliability, cramped engine design (intake and exhaust on same side) and ancient car designs pretty much ended any chance of being serious power players. Especially when Mitsu brought the 4G63T to the states.

That was a joint venture between Chrysler and of all people Lotus. It was available in 91 in the Spirit. In 1992 it became available in the Daytona IROC R/T and the Spirit R/T. They actually made a turboIV engine after that. They had killer power for the day. Something like 224 HP and 217 ft-lb in stock trim for the turboIII.

I'd rather have a glhs. I remember when they came out. I was a teenager riding around with a buddy in a 1970 GTO when this little black omni pulls up with some middle aged fella in a suit driving it (Must have been a car salesman). Were in the 4 lane at a stoplight when he pulls next to us and gives her a rev. I'll never forget my buddies reaction when we take off like a bat outa hall and that fukin car blew my buddies doors off. It was classic. Neither of us could believe what just happend. That's actually what got me into sport compacts to begin with.

Decent power, an abundance of parts. and light as fuck. Perfect for going fast. Not to mention the sleeper image they have. And I like ugly cars for some reason. Call me cooky.

Turbo III was a much better design motor than the previous 2.2/2.5L SOHC motors. Crossflow head meant a much better flowing and high rpm capable top-end (Head was designed by Lotus). However, it was still plagued by the bottom-end. It was still the old 2.2L/2.5L bottom-end design, which meant while it now had good top-end flow....the block wouldn't stay together to take advantage of it. Not to mention the Turbo III motor is very rare, and try finding parts for that thing. The Turbo IV was just the same 2.5L Turbo I (rated at 150hp) but utilized a VNT turbo (variable nozzle turbo). Power output was close to 190hp but offered spooling times of the much smaller turbo cars. But once again, a rare turbo motor.

Ever seen plastic rims? The old turbo mopars were a haven for exp. models.
