Anyone here own this baby? Some guy from Moorhead? It's a rear-turbo setup, the kit is just about installed, it's pretty cool looking. It's got about 18' of intercooler piping. 😛

You caught me. 😄 Darn, I was hoping to show people the engine and pass it off as a cold air intake before races. 😉 Is there anyplace with a dyno around here?

Thats kinda crazy. Most people try and keep the piping as short as posible, thats the exact oppisite. Interesting idea, I would like to know how it works. But I agree with Wes, that turbo has to pressurize an awful lot of piping. To me that says lots of lag.

That must be that STS turbo kit, I have heard nothing but bad about taht place and their kit.

The main determinant of turbo lag is the time required to get the mass of the turbine and compressor rotating fast enough to produce boost, which is much longer than the time required to pressurize intake piping, even a lot of it. The sizing of the compressor/turbine and the exhaust housing are the main factors. Also, I wanted to keep power steering and A/C without a lot of hassle, and STS has about the only F-body turbo kit that does that.

Yeah, it's a STS kit. It's a relatively small turbo, and a relatively large engine to spool it, it should be ok. The dyno sheets that Hod Rod mag had made it look like it spooled pretty good. The IC piping is really small diameter (2"?), I suppose that helps keep the mass of air low enough to probably be the equivalent of my 3" piping and big azz intercooler?\

well then dave, if you've seen dyno sheets.... what do those kits pick up for power? See them every once and a while, but everyone's usually had good things to say about that style of kit. Just seems like I"ve never seen a that style of setup make a whole lot of power... (only turbo setup done on a late model 4.6L Tbird was a rear setup like that....only made low-mid 200RWHP IIRC [up from probably 180 stock])

Very interesting. We were talking about such a setup on the mazda6tech.com forums here. If you're willing adog I'd love to get a closer look sometime as the guys on 6tech are interested in such a setup.

I've got a vid of a guy with the same turbo set up on his car. You wouldn't be able to hid that for long. The bov had no engine comp to muffle it. ( it was REAL LOUD).

there is a guy who did the same setup on his F150 v6 and he didnt like it at all..he then built a front mounted turbo and is much happier..the air filter on the sts kit is located under the vehicle..that cant be good

I think the HP went up about 150rwhp. The magazine got ~458rwhp and 511rwtq at 7 psi of boost (from memory).

well, on the plus side, the exhaust is a lot shorter than most drag-only cars... but i don't think that's the best idea for driving around here, especially with a car. with a truck, i think it would be a good idea, could use a huge turbo, like dave mentioned.
i'll do some looking around, i remember seeing a post about a guy that was using two t25's to boost his 3.8 fbody (i think it was a 98?)

LS1's are fast stock so adding a turbo will inevitably add ass loads of horsepower.

Yeah what is up wiht the filter replacing an exhaust tip, that will look funky.. also think of all the dirt off the dusty roads here in n. dakota getting thrown off the tire rigth onto that poor filter.
