I went through an airbag class for some of my firefighting stuff (and for my extrication training) that talks alot about the bad bad things that can happen if you're not in the 'right' spot - namely a video of a firefighter who ended up in the hospital for months after taking on one of those during an extrication.
That's why you need to wear seatbelts and maintain a safe distance from the dash/wheel when in a vehicle with airbags.
