He uses a method called "Walking the cup". Its a method a lot of very experienced welders use to get consistency in welds. they actually rest the gas lense on the metal they are welding.
I have one of these goofy Subaru boxer intake manifolds sitting around not being used, it is stripped down with no junk on it now. Free and I could drop it off as I am always running around town.
