  • How to fix the Economy

Pass the FairTax! Is it the perfect tax system? Far from it. Will it piss a lot of people off? Oh yes it will, beautiful! If someone pays $0.23 worth of tax every time that they spend $1.00 they'll get a constant reminder of exactly how much their government costs them. That everyday reminder should get enough people in this country pissed enough to do something about our bloated government.

No taxes on businesses should help make US companies more competitive in foreign market. No/few exemptions should rid us of all our lobbyists and BS loopholes. The black markets (drug dealers, prostitutes, etc.) and illegal immigrants start paying towards our budget. If illegal immigrants want to stay illegal, then they will not receive “prebate”, but will still be required to pay taxes every time that they buy anything.

Because I under that it is very unlikely that the FairTax will ever gain enough traction to pass I’ll make another suggestion. How about we turn every person that is accepting unemployment into an INS official? I don’t have a major problem with immigration. I do, however, have a problem with social programs that are specifically designed for people that will never pay into them. If the unemployment rate is 5%, that puts 15 million people on unemployment. That’s around 1 INS official for every illegal immigrant in the country. Round them all up, give them the choice to legalize and start paying taxes or get shipped back home. If 10 million decide that they want to stay and their average income is just $20,000/year and their effective tax rate is 15% we’d still bring in an additional 30 billion dollars each year.

Time to finish my lunch break and get back to work. I'm glad that I still have a job; I hope that everything can turn around. I hope that US citizens can bring some personal accountability back into their lives and turn our country around. I'm sorry, but borrowing money to stimulate the economy will only draw out our problems. I can hear Obama's next campaign slogan already, "Let's finish this!" I think that we all know that 4 years from now we’ll be a long ways away from the “Change” people believed in.

This is BS as far as I'm concerned, but a B is a B.

It goes both ways though. I had classes at NDSU where I'd get a 50% and still get a B. Some of my math classes (Calc 1 & 3, and I think Diff Eq) had a "grading rubric" where you got a 0-5 on each problem. This put a B at 60% and plenty of people still failed.

It's going to be a long road to your degree if you're going let one class stress you out. I spent my first 2.5 years worrying about my grades until I got my internship. My boss at my internship basically told me that the only thing I needed to be a successful engineer was get to my piece of paper; he was right.

What's your major? Depending on your major (chemistry, math, pharmacy, engineering, architecture, etc.), your overachieving classmates won't be going away anytime soon. They'll just be getting smarter because the ones who can't cut it will drop out or change majors. Just make fun of them and tell them that while they were studying you were doing the girl that they want to hook up with.

Try not to stress too much about school man; it's probably the main reason so many people don't make it to the end. Also, depending on your major, GPA doesn't matter nearly as much as the smarty pants classmates will lead you to believe. These are the same people that you will see in grad school because they're scared to enter the job market and grow up. These are the same people that will be sitting in a cube running calculations their whole career; to each their own I guess.

Also, the weak US dollar has a lot to do with it as well. Our dollar doesn't buy what it used to (Canadian dollar is $1.07 compared to our $1.00) and therefore we aren't able to buy the oil as cheaply as before. The flip side of that is that we are now able to export more goods (wheat, etc...) on account of this.

(wait, did Dave and I just agree on something?)

Without all of the speculation it would take considerable time for today’s jump in crude to trickle down to the pumps. If a barrel is purchased by the refinery today, how long does it take until it actually shows up at our local gas station? A month? A week? Either way, the oil company will jack the price of gas today based on today’s market speculation. When the oil market goes stagnant for a few days and crude sits still or trades lower, the gas prices still stay high for a few days. I have a feeling all of the record profits being scrubbed by the oil companies the last few years can be attributed to this simple notion. They are much quicker to raise their prices due to speculation than they are to lower their prices due to the actual market price of crude.

So I wonder how much in tax everyone would need to pay if the only thing the Govt spent money on were the things it was SUPPOSE to spend money on. ie: military, interstate road systems, etc and not all these friggin handouts or some special library named after xyz congressman.

Every year I get all worked up about taxes at least a couple of different times. Yesterday, pay day, was one of those times again. I am in the same boat as you Dave; whenever I work overtime I get killed. I live in Minnesota, am single, and bought a house too late this year to itemize, so I actually get killed about as bad on taxes as anyone can who earns less than $150,000. Next year I’ll be able to itemize and deduct my interest, so at least I’ll be able to garner that deduction in my overall tax burden.

I am a supporter of the FairTax idea, but not everything, or a lot of things, which it proposes. One reason I really like the FairTax is because it lets every individual determine their own tax burden. If you don’t want to pay high taxes, don’t buy a new TV, motorcycle, car, etc. If I feel like living a frugal lifestyle now in order to retire early, it would be much easier to put away a bunch of cash without have my check destroyed by income taxes. If you look at this country’s spending habits vs. income levels it shows that taxing a person’s purchases vs. their income is actually a more stable means of collection. I don’t agree how the FairTax supporters pitch it as the be-all, end-all idea that is going to save the country. I’m not going to go into this all right now because this thread isn’t about the FairTax initiative.

I’m not a Republican or a Democrat; I dislike each side just about the same. I wish people wouldn’t always turn the tax discussion (or any political discussion for that matter) into a partisan debate. Why can’t we all simply agree that the government spends entirely too much money and has been doing this for years? The 9 trillion dollar national debt was not created solely by one political party. The US collected a little over 2.2 trillion dollars last year. They paid around 406 billion on interest on the national debt. I would like to see a shift in our government's focus to paying off the national debt. Suspend any new programs, additions to existing programs … anything that would mean additional spending. Use any surplus, not the surplus left after the new programs, to pay down the debt. Without the national debt the US would be left with an additional 20% to give back to its citizens. This would only happen though if the citizens required the government to curtail their spending before and after the debt is paid off.

How much do we spend on “fluff” every year? Why should everyone be entitled to a free ride if they don’t feel like working? Why should living in the US entitle you to anything besides a chance to go get yours? Last time I checked, if I don’t work show up for work, I don’t get a paycheck. The same should go for those on welfare. If you can’t find a job, the government should give you one. You can’t tell me there isn’t work that could be done of every city block in this country (picking up trash, painting buildings, cleaning toilets). At least we’d be getting something out of our tax dollars, plus it would offer incentive to go get a better, possibly even a real job.

Please don’t paint me as a cynic that thinks that welfare if the worst thing in the world. Social programs are and should be in place to give people a chance to better themselves. I have an old co-worker who is currently on welfare and using it the way that is should be. His wife goes to school full-time and works part time. They have two kids. He quit his full time job to go back to school full time. He is given a few grants to help pay for school, he gets his healthcare picked up by the state (MN Cares), and he spends the next couple of years suckling on our country’s teat. I know him though and the minute that he is done with school he will be back into the workforce earning a much higher wage, providing much higher tax revenue each year until his retirement. Before making his decision, he bought his trailer house and paid it off by working the last few years. Would he rather have a nicer/newer house? Of course, but he is willing to sacrifice a few years of his life to have a better future. This is the kind of thing that these programs do and should allow, nothing more-nothing less.

Why should I have to pay for someone else’s perpetual lack of education, skill, determination, or whatever else is keeping them from making it in this country. I’ve had to work for every cent I have. I worked my ass off while going to college pay my bills. I applied for an NSF scholarship and was awarded a $13,000/year scholarship. After filling out my FAFSA information the scholarship was withdrawn because I made too much money. If I was have been sitting on my ass on financial aid I would have been awarded this scholarship. I still managed to work my way through school and left without a single loan for my schooling. Being debt free has allowed me to do so many things that I wouldn’t be able to do otherwise, just as it would the United States government.

Sorry for the ridiculously long rant. My lack of sleep (went to the Sevendust concert last night) coupled with the Red Bull that I just slammed has turned mind onto thinking about a myriad of different things all at once.

Does anyone in the area have Verizon Wireless Broadband Access? I live about 15 miles east of Detroit Lakes and don’t have a service provider that offers broadband internet. Obviously I can get WildBlue (satellite internet), but it would take me over 2 years to break even when comparing it to Verizon’s $60/month vs. WildBlue’s $50/month, plus $300 for equipment.

So, does anyone in the area have Verizon Wireless Broadband Access? If so, have you used it in the Detroit Lakes area? I don’t want to go sign a new 2 year agreement with Verizon only to bring it home and find out it doesn’t work at my house. Hopefully I can set up a trial with Verizon so I can ensure proper function before getting locked up in the contract.

All of the pickups, trailer, and 4 wheelers used for the soil sampling are “gone.” I guess they don’t even know where they’re at yet. The company my dad works for also has a plant in Northwood. It sounds like the roof is ripped off.

Everyone in my family is alright … my parents live in Portland, ND and my uncle lives in Grand Forks. It sounds like the whole town is torn up pretty good though. Hopefully everyone has been found and treated.

If you can specify the manufacturer of the motor I'll probably be able to get you a model specific wiring diagram. Here is a Baldor diagram for their single phase motors:

A similar diagram should be found on the inside of the cover for the conduit box, or somewhere else on the motor.

How many HP motor and how many amp breaker? If you know what the full load amp (F.L.A.) rating on the motor is you'll be able to tell whether or not the breaker should be tripping.

    Hope this helps.

It is definitely not for the faint of heart such as someone thinking it will be a weekend install and one day dyno tune.

If I ever get my car finished it will be it will be running a Megasquirt. I built the computer early last summer and everything tested out just fine. I will be running fuel only control right away until I get all of the bugs worked out, then I will add the spark output option and take over my timing as well. The entire Megasquirt community has been growing a lot in the last year which gets more people involved in finding new ways of using the existing board for more options. I haven't been in the Megasquirt loop (I know what you're thinking) for quite a while again, but there were plans for ULTRA Megasquirt which was going to be a extremely powerful, reliable computer. It would use a new processor and almost all of the components would be surface mount instead of the thru hole components. This also makes it very hard (pretty much impossible) to hand build. ULTRA Megasquirt would have everything built right in: fuel, spark, wideband input, stepper IAC control, etc.

I can understand spending the money an AEM, MOTEC, Hondata, or comparable standalone computer if they make a kit for the specific application (Civic, Integra, DSM, Supra, RX7, etc.). For those of us who don't have a plug and play EMS available, it really makes sense to Megasquirt because you will have to build your own wiring harness, add sensors, and make other modifications either way. The tuning GUI isn't quite as cool as some of the mainstream EMS's, but the functionality is still all there. Follow the link that Kevin posted and you will have more information than you might want. Also check out http://www.msefi.com/ for more info on developments in hardware, software, different vehicle installs, etc.

    2nd Gen Probe GTs have a 2.5 Liter V6.

The dual feed fuel setup that pin mentioned helps insure even fuel distribution. 2nd Gens are plauged with factory side feed injectors the are fed in series, causing the 5th and 6th cylinders to run lean when extra fuel is required (F/I or Nitrous applications). Splitting the pressure side and combining the return helps equalize fuel pressure to the injectors. There are a few GT owners that I know of that run dual A/F gauges to make sure that both banks of the motor are running sequentially. When I wire my fuel computer I plan might wire in both O2 sensors to monitor/log both banks of the motor when I am not running my wideband.

I don't know the individual who owns the car and haven't had a good look at the car or its modifications. Based on the appearance of the car and behavior of the driver I am led to believe most is probably fluff. Oh well, there is your 2nd Gen Probe edumication for the day.

I'm not even done with my 94', but have already been looking at compressor maps for a turbo for my 96'. I just took a job in DL, so I will still be close enough to Sabin to get out to most of the events next summer. Hopefully this next summer will be bigger and better that last summer. This is just my opinion, but there is no reason besides bad driving that would stop that car from running in the 10's. Up-pipe as they are referring to is is the same as the manifold on a 4 cylinder or the sum of the two banks on a v type motor (V6 or V8, not VTEC).

Correct order = Filter, TC, IC, CC, UP, TC, DP, exhaust

Intake air through the filter on the cold side of the turbocharger where it is pushed through the compressor. Then it enters the intercooler to be cooled before entering the combustion chamber. It is then burned and expelled through the manifold into the up-pipe (collector) and goes through the hot side of the turbo which drives the compressor. Gases then go through the downpipe, which is connected to the exhaust or in many cases on modified turbo cars the atmosphere.
