Performance Enthusiest Lack In ND
-
For me it is a matter of priorities. I know approx how fast my car will run at any given event (if things don't break), I am decently satisfied with my numbers, I'd like to be faster, but I'm happy not being broken. While I do enjoy drag racing, I'd much rather watch (or participate if my car was so equipped) in an auto-x event, road course or rallycross.
My car was built to be fun to drive and occassionally race. I'm sure I will mod it more over the years, but if I never go faster than 13.0 I don't care. If I never break 350whp thats fine. If I never break any parts I'm ecstatic. To me there is more to life (and owning a performance car) than going fast. That doesn't bode well for performance shops however. As much as I like watching/participating in drag races, I doubt I'd ever lose any sleep over not having a track nearby. Yes it would suck to have to drive further, but as often as I race, distance is a non-issue.
Speaking of bracket racing, I actually prefer that over heads up racing (if noone sandbags). I like the thrill of chasing down a slower car or the rush of watching a faster car creeping up on me as I go. Then there is the aspect of the potential to get some money back from bracket racing by winning your class or a jackpot race. With heads up test & tunes, the only potentially good thing that can happen is you don't break and you go a little faster each time.
I don't know if the rest of the racing community feels the same way I do (I'm sure most don't) but I thought I'd share my reasoning for not attending track days.

IDk im sure this will sound dumb but.... Is it just me or is it the older people keeping to themselves and the younger teenagers keeping to themselves. I think if things got mixed up and the older people were more excepting of the younger generation coming in things would be a lot better. We are the ones that are going to keep the scene going..... Let me know if im wrong because i know i am kind of intimidated to just go up and start talking to the older guys. I know it might sounds stupid let me know!

The big thing for me right now is $$$$$$$. I have all the will and want to build up a car but lack of funds. I will however be doing something in the near future as my youngest kid has a real "thirst" for a performance car so-to-speak.
But I truly believe that there is a scene out there but it's asleep and needs a good kick in the ass.

I've watched it over the years slowly get worse and worse, but this year its just dead. Why its dying off so bad is what we're trying to figure out and what we need to do to change it. I think they said the last street legal car count was only 58. Last time i checked prior years it was a consistant 125+ cars w/ like 300 spectators.
We're heading down to Sioux Falls tonight to run their street legal event and shootout tomorrow, who else is going? Let me guess, nobody!!

Don't have an "I know everything attitude" when you talk to us because we will just pass you off. The reason the "older" guys in the scene keep to themselves is because of the ricers. I can personally tell you I don't like to go out as much anymore because nothing ever happens except for ricers being stupid. I know when I was part of the "younger" crowd, I asked questions and listened to the answers from the "older" crowd. I can honestly trace my interest back to about 3 people. Sometimes I just tagged a long, and maybe I wasn't welcome but I learned a lot and sparked my interest in the right way.

with paying for college, school books, rent, gas, insurance, food, ect. I hardly have enough money to buy things for my car anymore. I want that to change though...If you offered a cheap turbo kit id be REALLY interested:icon_bounce:
I go to school. I have bills. You just work hard for your parts. It's SO worth it.
We do have a cheap turbo kit, it's a D-series Mini-log kit for $650. C'mon thats not even expensive!

96Talon: I'm pretty sure if you came up and talked to the "old timers" you would find that they are very approachable. Especially guys like Matt & Dave. Dave has offered more advice to me than any other person in this area and (if he's not busy) always seems to be willing to take a ride in my car with me to give me pointers on what I can do better to tune my vehicle or get a better run in. IOW if we seem intimidating, it is not intended that way. Come up, say hi, tell us who you are, what you drive, etc... Think of it this way, its way easier for us to break the ice talking with DaveH than it is for him to do the same with us. Why? Because everyone knows who he is, what he drives, etc.... What does he know about you? Nothing until you introduce yourselves.

im working on making my car as quick as it can be with what i can afford. that usually involves used parts and making due with what I can get. a grand or two here and there for turbo kits and custom installs is hard to come by for alot of people, ya know
alot of the time, when i go hang out with some ppls with imports around here and even from this forum, I feel out of place because alot of them are younger kids with flashy cars and big egos when im an older guy (25 haha) and my car looks pretty much stock, when in reality, I've done quite alot of work on it since I got it and it's quite a bit quicker than alot of thier hondas and such. But since I don't have any racing seats or gauge pods or fancy air fresheners I guess I don't count. Just seems to me that is the attitude around here as of late. -
Ya that makes a lot of sence! I know i have tried to get know some people at the T-masters in Grand Forks. Idk you get some that are kool and will help with ya anything you need but you still have those that are going to be ass holes... I think its those guys who are the one that detur us from trying to meet new people... But ya i agree with you 100%..

Body kits and ricer parts rule now. Partly because the people with money into their motor don't show up because they got fed up with the ricers. So when one does show up that dones't know everyone or no one knows them, then they get kinda played off. When in reality, power rules the streets, not that gay ebay body kit or ricer interior. What's cool in this town is just so off base. I think one night all of the "older" supporters of the scene need to go out and school everyone. Maybe if they see us with performance parts, they will get an interest. Then again maybe not. I think they think we are too cocky for them, but in reality, it's their attitude that makes us maybe look that way. Of course we aren't going to take you seriously when you rice around like a lot of people do.

Agreed... Its just some of the people not all of them! Its like they look down on you because your car isnt as "good" as theres! -
I'm going out on a ledge here, but I think a LOT of the reason the scene is dying is because of the shit talking that goes on between ALL of the shops in town. People are hesitant to buy from Tintmasters if they have friends at SLS or vice-versa. I know that Shane & Nick hate each other (no secret) but that doesn't mean that both are capable shop owners. Is one better at some things than the other? ABSOLUTELY! But IMO the better shop (whichever it may be) shouldn't belittle the other because of it, they should just work on making themselves better. How about a joint event between the two shops? Something that both promote equally. That would speak volumes to the level of commitment that each shop has to the community. Here is how I'd envision it:
2 day event:
Day 1:
Outdoor Car Show (Show & Shine) presented by Tintmasters
Dyno Tuning sponsored by SLS
Auto-X Sponsored by TintmastersDay 2
Show & Shine continues (TM)
Burnout Contest by SLS
Dragrace Test & Tune TM
Quick 8 Bracket Showdown by TM & SLS -

Good thinking Chuck. -
id show up for that.
-
Well the problem with the Dyno thing is no one ever comes through. Every always gets hyped up for it and starts planning for it. The day comes and 2 or 3 imports show up and the rest are domestics. We trailed a car over 3 hours to dyno tune yesterday and it sucks, but a dyno would NEVER survive in Fargo. There are atleast 5 different import shops in Minneapolis that have a Dyno, wouldn't you think that Fargo could atleast support ONE? I don't see it happen in the near future.

id be out every street legal day but im in the process off building my car, work and working on it takes up majority off time. i probably wont have my car racing at the next event but u never know, thing may go faster then planned. however i mighnt be racing another car on those days u never know. ive had a blast when i raced out there. but ill be attending for sure as always

Quick 8 Bracket Showdown by TM & SLSPeople still gotta show up. If they dont race now, whats gonna make them race then? Problem is half the people have your mentality where they've raced once they know what their car will run so they dont ever bother to show up again, or they say my cars slow why bother race it. Its like like an sport for say golf, do you go to a golf course golf it once or twice and never go back because you know what your score is on that course?
The problem isn't a lack of support from the shops or the older crowd, thats just a piss poor excuse. Sorry but im gonna be blatently honest on this whole topic of how i see things as i've been in the scene around here since day 1 and i know how it used to be, and how it hasn't progressed. Year after year we go to the track to see no competition, basically we wanna watch someone else put up some #'s for a chance, give us a show. Problem is there's such a gray area in the scene. You got the guys who are hard into running the times and putting up the big numbers, then you got the majority of the crowd who doesn't care to progress and are running 14's and slower which is fine because @ least their showing up and supporting the cause. There's really no middle area here you got the cars 11's and faster and 14 and slower which i find very odd there's no middle area 12 and 13 second cars around here.
Shop competition PINKS battle, lets do this!!
