Performance Enthusiest Lack In ND

Good job Hando; like the idea; nice touch w/ the added iDrags event too.
On a side note, I'm up 4 some serious cruising tonight; who else will be?

I, personally, will go around to local business' that people suggest and ask if they would be willing to let us hang out there at night if we keep everything clean and aren't idiots. I've said it before and no one really had anything to say to me. I would do this but I need COMPLETE cooperation with what ever they say, if not I will not hesitate to give the local authorities a call. You guys need to do the same. If you see someone driving like a jackass(stupid ricer shit etc), don't hesitate to call them in. Make sure they know you are part of the import crowd and are tired of the bad name you are getting because of a few bad apples. I did it once this year and I really haven't been out after that because I don't feel like just cruising. I like a hang out spot. Sure Tintmasters lets us sit out there but theres NOTHING out there. Main Avenue was cool 4 years ago before it had all that construction closed it for a year or whatever. 13th and 32nd are the new hot spots. Tell me who to go talk to and I will gladly go ask them. To get anything in this scene you have to be a leader and not a follower anymore.
i for one am sick and tired of the stupid shit some people do when we actually get a small crowed together to cruise wich is ever so often, and yes we are getting a horrible reputation not only from the cops but from normal people as well, when i got rear ended about a month ago the cop was pissed at me even tho i wasnt no ware near being at fault, he said that mabey if we wernt swerving all over the road and such all the time we wouldnt get in accidents. this cop was noware in site when i got hit and he just assumed that that is what happened. then later after the police report he came and tried to chew out everybody at advanced auto parts. its getting rediculous to the point of which i dont even want to go out and cruise because there are so many stupid people out there, now im not saying that i have never done any of this type of stuff but there is a time and a place to do it, for example i think it was 2 weeks ago when we were cruisn down 13th and this kitted blueish accord just rips the ebrake and kicks it sideways almost smoking another car, thats the type of stuff that needs to be stopped. i remeber last year alot of us would meet at the kmart on University, but if i remember right someone screwed that up too. now id be glad to help get a place for all of us to chill as long as we dont have any of this stuff happening. idk mabey some of you will dissagree but thats just my 2cents. -
Here comes my .02 Megan and I have been talking alot about this lately.
I've been into cars MY WHOLE LIFE. I grew up LOVING muscle cars. As far as cars go in this scene I've had an 89 nissan maxima with rims and a fart can, a 79 monte carlo low rider (swivel bucket seats, hydraulics, 120 spoke rims, etc...), a 95 eclipse rice rocket, and now I'm building a 95 civic hatch.
I moved away from grand forks in 2001 because the scene there is FULL of assholes (as was mentioned earlier) with shitty slow rice rockets. When I got to fargo what did I see? I saw some rice, some quick, some show, some stereo competition cars, etc but the guys with the fastest, the loudest, the best looking all had HUGE EGOS. I love the cars in the scene, but I hate the attitude that comes with the scene (ask lankordie, we had this same conversation a couple of years ago when i first joined the boards). The scene goes through phases, when I had my maxima I had dreams of a sweet body kit to go with my chrome rims and yellow headlights, next thing I knew I was stupid for having chrome rims and yellow headlights. Well, look whats back polished rims (non-rice chrome) and yellow headlights and body kits.
Now, like I said, I'm building a car at the moment, and Megan's car is in the body shop. Are we in any way helping the scene this year, nope. But at the same time I have seen more "I'm going to do this" attitudes with no results in the last year than I have in my whole life. Everyone has a project that they give up on within 2 months and then sell the half completed car. So just by sticking with the project from start to finish I feel I am still helping the scene. At the same time I've got a rice-boi neighbor that has been watching me build my hatch, he has been asking questions, he has been learning, and I feel I have been passing down my knowledge to a younger generation of car enthusiest.
Bottom line is the scene is constantly changing, I don't feel that it is dying, I feel it is at a slow point. If we want the scene to grow we NEED cruises, we need smaller egos, we need to find a good spot to hang out, the shops need to drop their petty bullshit and try to work together on things, the race days need to be promoted, the autocrosses need to be promoted, the car shows need to be promoted, etc...
I'm going to go get some famous daves now, but I'll catch up on this thread later, I've got more ranting where this came from.

Lots of long thought out responses in this thread, I skimmed over some but figured I would add my .02.
I am pretty much in agreeance with darkelvis, the general attitude I get from the import crowd, and the sport truck crowd is, if you dont have a ride with you that meets their criteria, you are unwanted. I've tried talking to people off forums like these at shows and what not, or people with rides I like, and it seems like as far as the imports go, I own trucks and classics, so its some kind of burden to the owners if I take a interest in their import car.
As far as sport trucks go in ND, its the same deal. Doesnt matter if some of the guys I have talked to on the internet about my bagging project on my 90 Chevy, they have too big of ego to talk to me face to face.
Now you may rag on hot rodders and guys into muscle cars, you know, the mainstream auto areas in ND, but you wont get that attitude 95% of the time from them.
Now honestly I could care less if I fit in with the "scenes". If I want to build a car or truck, Ill do it, Im not doing it to impress anyone or make friends. But I will bs with anyone who asks about them.
But what about those people looking to get into cars for the first time? Go out trying to talk to people, meet people in the know, trying to find out what parts are good and what arent, see different styles, etc, and all they get is the cold shoulder.
IMO if you are too good to talk to someone about your car, do me a favor, just drive your car, dont bother putting it in a show because for a lot of people a car show is a place to bs with people about cars and meet people.
Plus I never got the "too good for you attitude" thing for one major reason, by not meeting new people you are passing up possible connections.

Everyone on this site is an asshole, and thats what keeps us together as a family. :icon_blackeye:
Oh the scene is dead in Bismarck as well, also Minot has some loss of light on there scene. The small scene that was here has diminshed into thin air.
Shit I havent even thought about cars in a year. lmao well sort of, but my new job $$$ and new location next month are going to change that factor heavily.
One step closer to my G35.

A couple things I have noticed over the last year and a half or so....
First, last year, for some reason, seemed a lot more involved like most have said than this year. Every week there was a "CRUISE THIS FRIDAY?" thread. This year the last cruise I heard of was July 4th and before that was early June or May sometime...I know it has to do with the fact that nobody wants us hanging around in their lot. What we should do is try find a business that can handle a decent amount of vehicles that we have an agreement with, we dont mess around in the lot and they let us stay, especially if they're closed by the time we'd be there and wouldn't interrupt any business.
Second for me at least is the lack of local places that cater to domestics. Like others have said, I can't name a single shop that specializes in domestic performance parts...everything is more focused on older DSM's, Mitsubishis, and Subarus. Now granted I know we could probably bring our cars in to a shop like SLS or Tintmasters and possibly get them to work on it, but it'd be a lot nicer to have a shop that knows your car a little better and doesn't seem to have a bias towards import vehicles (not trying to start a war here, i'm not saying anyone is like this but we'd be stupid and blind to say that everyone doesnt have a slight bias towards what they like). Some parts and upgrades are fairly simple DIY jobs, but sometimes it would be nice to have the input of a shop as to how to do a certain thing or who would be able to get it in, get it done, and get it out fairly quickly without charging a kidney and two testicles. There is more I could add to this probably but don't remember because of the time and my lack of brain function.
Thirdly is all the fighting. Now this is where I REALLY don't want to start a fight or anything, but this is where the tempers flair and E-penises/egos grow. There are so many little "click" type things here that the community as a whole really can't come together on one thing that we all enjoy, modifying vehicles or just enjoying them for what they are. Import vs Domestic, V8 vs 4 Cylinder vs 6cylinder, Shop vs Shop, Mitsu vs Suby, etc etc. Nobody allows anyone else to have their own opinion without cutting them to pieces over it. Any time an import owner posts a video or comments on a domestic getting raped all the domestic people flip shit and go on about the mighty V8, any time we post a video of an import getting smoked or talk about it all the import people flip out and how the HP/Liter ratio of a import > Jesus Christ himself. Sure it's fine that we can all have the usual Ford vs Chevy, Domestic vs Import rivalrys, but at the same time it seems we've lost focus on the fact that different budgets and incomes, lifestyles, and tastes are different for every person and shop. Instead of trying to force your vehicle beliefs on everyone just live and let live a little more. Don't like the carbon fiber hood this person has? shut the fuck up and live with it, it's not your car. We have to try take a little less personal level with things and just be happy with what we have and what we like, and realize not everyone thinkgs that way.

well i dont have any input on the scene dying or anything like that but i know i'd like to do more to my civic to make it faster...but theres no further options besides n/a right now that i see....i'd like to have a turbo manifold made and make my own kit...but theres no one around that i know of that will make me one.....but once my new clutch is in my dsm...i'll have it at the track...and not breaking anything but into the 12's.:) hopefully.
Tony...you should go talk to the manager of the new scheels....its a nice big parking lot.....the owner is obviously into cars so i dont see why he wouldnt let us have events there.

Just some suggestions from my end......im not from fargo but i used to like going there to cruise and hang out, now not so much, but if there was somewhere to meet ppl i would come over more. The other thing is a suggestion for the shop owners/employees, I have gone into 2 of the shops in Fargo more than once each and was never helped or talked to except maybe "what do you need?" after 5-10 minutes and then not talked to about anything else. Sometimes i was just coming to hang out, and sometimes i was actually there to buy stuff. I go to school at UND and i actually prefer the ppl up there at least at the shops they are cool and pretty willing to talk to a newbie usually.
A couple not specific examples would be i went in to look at buying a part, i was told they didn't have any in stock and that was it, no offer to do anything about it, so i ordered my $475 item off the internet. I have had this happen at least twice at different shops for stuff that i ended up ordering off the internet elsewhere.
So my suggestion would be teach employees to talk to ppl, it is the most basic part of sales. I really think that would get more ppl interested in buying parts and modding there cars, or at least keeping the buisness local.

Ok, so OI have not read this whole thread because I am just to lazy, so forgive me if I hit things that have already been said, but here it goes.
Gas is expensive, but thats not the real reason, just a factor. I also beleive the real reason has to do with the shops getting along. I will just say shop names because everyone already knows who they are anyways. I used to work at SLD, every time i go into work, I would get shit from people who were around the shop about having a tintmasters sticker on my car... i realize you guys are related in the market, but it just sucks that someone couldnt have a system and tint by tintmasters and a turbo kit by SLS. YOU ARE NOT DIRECT COMPETITION, GET OFF EACHOTHERS BALLS! I like hanging around SLS/SLD, and TM. I hang around tintmasters more because there is more people there, and even though I probably am, I dont feel like I am protruding on their space when I go in to talk. I have bought from both shops on more than one occasion and plan to keep doing so.edit: I am cool with both shops and would like to keep it that way. I am not hating on anyone in this post.

I used to notice this alot too, but now Nick has someone to work the customer service at SLS, and I think this will improve the walk in business they do get 10 fold. Tintmasters has gotten better, but still there is a little bit of that going on. Working with as much volume and as many different employees that they do, its hard not to get that at any shop of their size. U could either have someone that doesnt know what the fuck they are talking about give you awesome customer service, or you could have someone that knows what they are talking about and try to work with them. You will never get a perfect salesman, because most people that know a lot about aftermarket car parts, or cars in general, dont have customer service ezperience.

I guess i cant say much about the scene dying because i havent been around the scene there at all this year considering I moved 8 hours away. Im sure that makes most of you happy that I am gone finally cuz. But I do agree that people should welcome others more. Yeah I dont have a 300+hp car or anything special. But that shouldnt mean I cant be welcomed by the ppl who do have such a car. I have felt in the past that I wasnt welcome at all. Every time i opened my mouth I got bashed every time. There was a time that a few of you talked to me. I wont say names cuz the few of you should know who you are. I really love it when ppl are nice to you in person but the rest of the time they are to good for you. Say if someone is alone they will talk you but when they are around the bigger guys(shop guys) its like you dont exsist cuz they have to have their reputation stay up.
If everyone could get along I think it would be better. The scene here pretty much sucks to. Auto x is a big thing here cuz we only have the 1/8th mile in sturgis and its to expesnive to drive to sioux falls to race.
Most of you say you are just giving me shit about everything all the time. But why is it that you have to do such a thing. Why cant you all just be honest and helpful instead of asses so much. I have never met 90% of you that talk shit to me on here. I have no reason to get treated the way I do,
Maybe that could change also -
I sold my ricer car and there is nothing ricey about my civic. If there is what is it??
-
I never said anything about being ricey at all, I just said the older guys will give you shit because you are the younger guy. It happened to me and I'm sure it happened to most people that are now in the "older" guy crowd. It just gave me motivation to prove them wrong and show I'm for real. Too mant people do it for just the attention and thats the wrong reason to do it.

and on another note...
I'm not really sure why the scene has gone downhill. I never really saw what it was like back in the day, so I don't really have anything to compare it to. But if I had to say something about the scene going downhill it would have to be about the word trust and about shops. Anybody getting into the scene to begin with will most likely bring their vehicle some place to be worked on bc they dont know shit about how to work on the car (example, me 3 years ago). It's really disheartening when somebody can spend a lot of money someplace, only to have something taken from them. I'm surprised that I'm still in the scene after that. Shops need to be there to help out people, especially the n00bs. I'm not bringing this up to complain about it all over again or anything. I'm bringing it up because I think it's an important issue. If someone feels as though they got screwed over by a shop, the shop should then try to talk/work with the person. Not simply write them off and say screw you. Treat customers with respect and help them out and I'm sure they will return again for things. Sure, after awhile it won't be for labor or anything bc hopefully they'll be working on their own car (and I think that when people learn how to work on their own car, they will enjoy modding it to make it faster. Most people don't make their car fast and want body kits simply because they dont know what goes on under the hood. With a body kit, it's basically a piece of plasic that goes on the car, something that's viewed as very simple. Most people don't even know what engine is in their car. They don't even want to bother with it because it's viewed as too hard. That's the attitude that needs to change. People need to be shown that making a car decently quick isn't that hard or expensive to do.) But for parts or other random things the person will be glad to return their business because they know their money is going towards a good business and good people. Nobody wants to support something that they don't think is a good cause.
my .02
And for the record, I don't have a problem working with anybody from any shop. I simply brought this up because I think it's an important issue and nothing else. So don't take it as anything else.
