Have you done a compression test on the car to see if it is indeed a headgasket?

A compression test isnt a failsafe way to detect a blown headgasket.

which also leads me to wondering what makes you think it is blown? Not a common problem in the Miata 1.6 or 1.8.

I mentioned to the guy we should do a compression test, but it is using coolant pretty fast(half a gallon every hundred miles or so) it's not leaking externally and it was overheated for an extended period of time, plus I like tearing stuff apart....lol I just got done replacing a head off of a dodge minivan due to a horrible engineering defect, and dsm is off the hook on this one it wasn't the 3.0 it was the 3.8 which is also not mopar, it is made by cummins which I thought was odd since it wasn't a diesel, but their plant in mexico makes gas engines
