sounds like an ignition problem personally thats what happened to my civic. It would start and then run for 2 hours or so, then die randomly. and it would slowly lose RPMs when it died, I thought it was "gasping for gas" as you say, too. But the gas pedal didnt do anything.

I agree with the above few, check your fusible links, maybe a solenoid, and replace the fuel filter. Just as a precaution, make sure your Battery posts are clean to because my ford used to do that. Sometimes those battery posts get so corroded, the power doesn't get through the corrosion so you have to clean them.

ok before u get all crazy here start off with figuring out the starter problem

start at the starter, check for batt. voltage at the solinoid the ( the bigger post on the starter solinoid )
u should have the same voltage at the solinoid as the battery if no or very little voltage there is a problem between starter and battery

then (this will require another person) using volt meter or test light find the small wire coming off the solinoid (i think its purple) have ur test light to that and a know good ground and have somebody try to start it u should have close to batt power at the small wire when somebody tries to start it or it will light the test light

if there is no signal to the little wire when cranking then u probly have a ignition switch problem

after u check the starter out let me know and i can continue to help if u want

A scan tool isn't going to help anything...

Listen to Schell. If you have no crank, you have an open somewhere in your ignition circuit.

A scan tool might show why it is shutting off after 30 seconds, My suburban was doing that and a code for the ignition module came up, I talked to a guy at sellands he said that would cause my the faults i was having, also a new pick-up coil would probably be needed. Replaced one part at a time and he was right. Point being the scan tool saved me almost a hundred dollar charge to read the code and who knows how much to tow it there.

gm security stuff is kind of dumb sometimes if the car is started with out the key i.e. jumping the starter the computer will see that there no ignition switch signal and shut down the injectors or spark so that would explain why after jumping the starter that it runs for a few secs

figure out the starting issue first or else u be chasing multiple random problems all day, i do this for a living and i know how to save some headaches

Excellent advice Schell, if you want to check voltage at the ignition (key) switch, here are the colors

12volts red +12Volts ignition harness (Constant Power)
Starter yellow or purple +12Volts ignition harness (Power ONLY While Cranking)
Ignition pink +12Volts ignition harness (Power When Cranking & While in the "Run" Position)
Second Ignition white +12Volts ignition harness (Power When Cranking & While in the "Run" Position)
Third Ignition pink/white +12Volts ignition harness Notes: The pink/white does not exist on all models. (Power When Cranking & While in the "Run" Position)

first... ur gay. ur stang looks like ass. you go /cut wrists :icon_rr:

second, it was the starter relay in the fuse relay box under the hood. for some reason, it got really loose. Fixed that, and it started no problem. but the gasping for gas still was an issue. so i went and bought a fuel filter, put it in, and BAM BITCH, SHE WORKS.

So yep, she workin' good now.

                            thanks guys.

I know for a fact on a lot of Mustangs the key switch was definately the problem. They would not send power to the solenoid. That is what I would look at first..;)
