Chuck...do you really presume that he meant the literal characters in the game? C'mon, he simply meant that many people get carried away with it and just can't stop playing, therefore making WoW their (social) life, and how you twisted that into literal characters, I am not certain. Maybe it's bc you don't know people that can't stop playing...people whos grades have gone down the shitter bc of the game... If you can play it and just play it on occasion and no more then there's no problem. That's the bottom line here...it's more than entertainment for some, it's a lifestyle. You are right, I did (probably) misinterpret the intent of his post.
I probably know more MMORPG'ers that are addicted to WoW, EQ2, EQ1, Vanguard, SWG, UO, LoTR, etc.. than anyone on here....and yes, I've played every game I just listed... He stated that people who have no lives live out their lives through the game. I call BS on that. Are these games stupid addicting? Yes, absolutely! But the people that are addicted to them didn't necessarily not have a social life prior to playing these games. They probably had an addictive personality. Really any game can be addicting (or gaming system for that matter).
I don't think that anyone comes to these type of games looking for a life consuming event. It just happens. It is very easy to get caught up in the game and establish some very real relationships with people you meet. Most of the people I played with regularly have my phone number, aim, icq, yahoo, email, etc... because it turns out that they were nice people who shared some of the same interests that I did.
You tried to justify costs with me Torbs, ok, lets go down that road.
EQ2/WoW Annual Subscription = $180 + ~$40 Annually for expansions, etc.. (~$220 a year total)
XBL Annual Subscription = $50 + $40 for each additional game you buy....I know of no console players who have just one game for their console, lets say that you buy 5 games a year thats ~$250 annually to play mediocre games that you lose interest in quickly.
Therefore, by my calculations, it is only fair to assume that MMORPGS>console games since they cost less to maintain a level of enjoyment.

I have bought 3 games my whole life for my xbox...Halo 2, Forza 1 and 2...soon to be 5 with Halo 3 and NBA 2K8...The other normal xbox games I got were bought way back in the day by my dad...so those i really didnt have to pay for...that and i never even had XBL til about 3 years ago either heh...i was a bit behind on the times lol
So for ME...XBL is cheaper...for others that get bored with games prolly more...but who knows. It's all on a person by person basis.

I wasn't referring to just forza, but any XBL game...I'd rather be able to play a bunch of different games than just one and pay less for the service. That and a bunch of xbox games have upgrades quite often too. Halo 2, as an example, has now had 4 map updates since it came out...and for the record...RPG's are a joke :p: ...lol...i just cant stand the damn things...dont got the patiencedo you even realize how much WoW changes???? new spells, new classes, new talents, new zones, new continents, new instances, new armor, new weapons, new trinkets, new enemies......... and much much much more...

Ya, my cousins used to go to school, have jobs, etc. Now one just plays all night and sleeps all day. Also, my friend had Kingdom of Hearts, he played it almost 24/7 till he beat it...bad thing was it was in my dorm room and he was in there till like 5am some nights....

Anyone played Kingdom of Hearts? Now that game is addicting.:DA colleague of mine whom shares similar interest in games with me told about this game, at first I was taken back, thinking Disney characters, how could one adult possibly enjoy a game with Disney characters? Then I played it....and the game is amazing.
But back to being on topic, MMORPG's are great games, and I'll have to agree with Tjamz cost wise they aren't bad at all. Blizzard doesn't make as much money as you think with there subscription costs, it's more of an offset for maint.
Do I like MMORPG's personally? No. But to each his own, and I won't discredit that the game is a huge hit and had to have done something right. They cater to their audience very well and provide a great atmosphere. And more along alines of what Tjamz said - most people who rule their lives over WoW A) Didn't have a social life to begin with or B) Have an addicting personality, whether it's WoW, or something else they would be addicted to it.
I had to let go 1 of my former IT support professionals though however because of Everquest, he simply crossed the line between performing the work done that was expected and when that interfered - I simply could not let it happen (this was over 3 years ago when my company was just me and 4 other people)

I found the perfect t-shirt for all you MMORPG guys. Seen as how this thread was brought back from the dead.

Why should it? I and 8.2 million others won't let the game die.If you (and the 8.2 million others) haven't checked out Lord of the Rings online, you should. It is probably the best put together MMORPG that I've seen to date. Good story line, excellent gameplay and amazing graphics.....basically EQ2 level of graphics/detail/storyline with WoW level interface/fun/gameplay/smoothness.

I've been clean since I moved to Moorhead:) I just haven't had time to play or the money to buy a game card. I miss it though, sometime I feel withdrawal but it's all good
