I think pickup sounds retarded, i don't know very many ppl that refer to them regularly as pickups, but if anything, pickup sounds more hickish. I drive a truck.

mazda b2200 - makes me: dunno, I get dirty looks. That's not a real truck! ..no shit.

Acura Integra (clean, no exterior mods)- Uncle Ben's Instant Rice. Pull me over, I must be drifting.

1st gen CRX - holy fuel economy, batman. Makes me: In the way. Just pass me. I can't go faster.

80 CX500 - "you have a motorcycle?" ..makes me: a pesky biker. like two months a year.

anytime i see a "nice" SUV (lexus, MB ML class, navigator, etc), i assume the driver is a fat man who is not very intelligent, or a rich woman who is not very intelligent.

anytime i hear an american pickup truck with loud exhaust, i assume that the driver is an asshole

anytime i see a sport/compact/import with mis-matched color body parts, OEM or otherwise, i assume that they are driving a 90hp automatic and are excited about prom

no matter who i see, i assume that I will pass them under braking before the next turn and can get along with my business. But sometimes someone actually gets on the gas a bit and I am pleasantly surprised 🙂

You assume people driving luxury SUV's are not very intellegent?? Im guessing on average, the reason they can afford a nice vehicle is that they have made some intellegent decisions as far as work/investing/saving/money management.

If they're so damn smart, they wouldn't be driving such an impractical, profitable-for-the-auto-makers, overpriced, pile of ass.

Most people lease / make payments on cars, and the more expensive the car, the more often that's the case.

Debt financing a luxury automobile also is not typically a sign of vast intelligence or sound financial decision making. Leasing a luxury vehicle is basically renting an image, which may or may not be a good investment, I suppose.

And yes, there are plenty of ppl that have those financed or leased, but there are also plenty that can pay straight up cash or finance on a short loan that really won't be much more than anyone elses financing a normal car, so it is stupid to assume they are unintellegent cuz im guessing on average they are usually of average or above intellegence levels. Plus, how is it anymore stupid to finanace an expensive vehicle if you can afford the payments, than to finance a shitty vehicle. Most newer vehicles on the road are financed, so i guess that makes most ppl who buy a new/ newer car unintelligent.

Well, I do drive a brand new Audi that I own outright, but it's only a lowly A4. However, it gets great gas mileage and does extremely well in crash testing... features absent from most SUVs, luxury or otherwise. I assure you that I didn't get a station wagon with a manual transmission to improve my image, although I do happen to think it looks nice.

I got the base model engine because it has "adequate" performance for a family car, and because I wanted the great mileage and cost savings more than I wanted the high cost and poor mileage of an S4.

Well, a financed luxury SUV says a few things to me

                                          • person is dumb enough to buy an SUV when they can clearly afford better options
                                          • person borrows money to buy luxury goods, indicating a financial outlook that is somewhat more irresponsible than what I personally feel comfortable with.

Plus, how is it anymore stupid to finanace an expensive vehicle if you can afford the payments, than to finance a shitty vehicle.
Most newer vehicles on the road are financed, so i guess that makes most ppl who buy a new/ newer car unintelligent.

Well, you said it, not me.

In any case, paying interest to borrow money to purchase a depreciating asset is kind of a poor move.

Luxury cars, by definition, are "luxury" items and are beyond the justifiable needs of most people. It's fine for people to buy nice cars if they can afford them. When they need to borrow money to do so, that seems a little strange to me.

Should the guy that needs a reliable way to get to work to feed his family finance a reliable car if that's the only way he can get one? Sure. Should he finance a luxury car for "only" $100/mo more? Probably not.

The thread was about what your reactions to seeing different types of vehicles are. These are mine, and they're obviously prejudicial generalizations, not well-considered assessments made on a case-by-case basis.

I stand by my generalization, however -- most people in SUVs bought a stupid vehicle and paid too much for it, in many cases needing to borrow money just to get the thing.

I should also allow for the possibility that otherwise reasonable and intelligent people make stupid or emotionally justified decisons.
