Do you still have have the cat(s) installed? What about the emission stuff. Did who ever did the engine swap leave the emission stuff installed or did they hack it? I have a few ideas.....what kind of upgrades his previous owner install?

If the emissions stuff is removed, you should still leave the solenoids plugged in, then you won't get those CEL's. As far as the random/multiple misfire, I think there are some ghetto fixes out there, but the best way is with either DSMLink or a standalone EMS such as AEM. I'd just spend the money on the AEM and be done w/ it. I'm going on an assumption that you have the 6 bolt 1G motor in that car. I wonder if the P0420 could just be a bad O2 sensor. I know of an awesome trick for the 2nd O2 sensors on a 2G so you won't get codes for that.

It was pretty much a hack job. There's no cat installed and I from what I can see the 2nd O2 sensor isn't installed anywhere. The upgrades include an EVO III 16G Turbo, TurboXS Boost Controller, EVO III O2 Housing, Greddy BOV, Walbro 255 Fuel Pump, Apexi N1 Downpipe and Turboback Exhaust.

I can handle the general maintenance stuff, but there's more damn vacuum tubes under that hood than I know what to do with...

Yes, it is the 6 bolt motor. If I'm ready to spend the cash what size injectors should I go for? I'm not very familiar with the AEM, how does it compare to DSMLink? Is the AEM really $1900 (ouch)?

Well no cat and no O2 sensor downstream explains the code..P0420, Cat Effic Below Threshold (Bank 1). I dont know much about imports but do they run an O2 sensor before and after the cat?I know some people using an O2 sensor simulator to keep that code from popping up. Go over the vac hoses very carefully make sure they are plugged. Take your time and look over the entire engine bay. As for EVAP Ctrl System Gross Leak Detected. P1400 is your gas cap on good and tight? 🙂 sorry had to do it.

Actually don't most cars 95 and newer (OBDII) run 2 O2 sensors? One before and one after the cat is correct.

Also if your emissions stuff is removed, there shouldn't be that many vaccum hoses under the hood.

Ruthless351. Yes, I've checked the gas cap but I think I'll just replace the stupid thing since it could be a cheap fix for the P1400 code.

treimche. You mentioned a trick for the 2nd O2 sensor. If it isn't installed what can I do to stop the P0420 code? I'm not sure what emissions sensors have been removed and what just wasn't hooked up... If I purchase DSMLink or the AEM do I still need to worry about the codes?

GnArKiLl. Unfortunately my home garage is somewhat limited in tools (no compression tester), which is good because I only know enough to be dangerous.

                  Thanks for all the ideas.

Just get a socketed/chipped ecu and run DSMLink. Its all you really need. Other than that, if anything on here doesn't help, try www.dsmtalk.com just search and you will find all of your answers.

                    I wanna go fast!

DSMLink or AEM lets you run w/out a rear O2 sensor if you want. The trick I know is if you have the rear O2 hooked up, but don't have a cat in the car. If you plan on getting an O2 sensor to put in I can tell you how to do it.
