The buying price is all fine and dandy...now look at the (routine) maintenance costs of the vehicle over its lifetime and see which one is cheaper.

      BMW Ultimate Service™
Overview Warranty Maintenance Optional Programs Service & Warranty Books

We design extraordinary cars. It only seems right to offer a service plan to match.
Only BMW offers a comprehensive suite of premium vehicle maintenance services for absolutely no cost: buy a BMW now and pay no maintenance costs for 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Featuring the following services, BMW Ultimate Service™ lives up to its name:
New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty: This warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship for the first four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, so you can rest assured your BMW will perform as expected.
BMW Maintenance Program: One of the most comprehensive maintenance programs in its class, covering all factory-recommended maintenance services during the New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty Coverage Period, as well as specific items that require replacement due to normal wear and tear, such as brake pads, brake discs and wiper blade inserts.
Four years of the BMW Assist™ Safety Plan: Many 2007 and later models include a four-year, unlimited mileage subscription to the BMW Assist trade; Safety Plan including TeleService, an exclusive BMW benefit which allows your vehicle to contact your BMW center directly when it needs service or maintenance.
Unlimited-Mileage Roadside Assistance: Receive Roadside Assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for the first four years of ownership, without any mileage limitation.
No other premium automaker provides such comprehensive benefits for absolutely no cost. So while other car owners will incur from several hundred to over one thousand dollars of maintenance or repair costs during the first 4 years they own their vehicles, you pay nothing for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles.

After all, an Ultimate Driving Machine® - and its driver - deserve nothing less than BMW Ultimate Service™.

      IntelliChoice Data

I have a 2007 BMW 335i.... I havent paid a cent for ANYTHING. Oil, wipers, brake pads. ALL free.

Must I say more??? The ford taurus is an inferior car to allllll Sports sedans in this segments. Infiniti, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, audi.... they all leave ford in the dust. Bottom line. a 44 thousand dollar ford "Sports sedan" is a fail. Note to Ford: You're not a Luxury brand, thats what lincoln is for.. Utilize it.

i bet if everyone keeps giving personal car ownership anecdotes we'll solve the question of what car is best.

But until then, i think we can conclude that paying 40k for a taurus that's slower than a 10k 2000 S4 with 100hp less seems silly. You could buy a lot of turbos with the 30k you saved.

Oh that is very true, I would love to own a BMW. I'm just saying, each brand has their pitfall. Ford's reliability isn't as bad as people seem to make it out to be. It always seems like everyone says they are piles and fall apart, yet nobody I know who owns an F150, Taurus, or Mustang seems to have excessive problems vs the people I know who own civics, tundras, or other non-ford vehicles. I think a lot of it has to do with people just playing down the issues with their brand and playing up the issues with other brands.

Like your S4 comment...I personally wouldn't touch an audi with a 10 foot stick based on all the bad comments I've heard about them, especially when they reach 100K+ miles. In fact I was very close to buying an S4 before Troy put his Lexus up for sale. Then there are people who have driven audi's their entire life, 200K+ on each one with no issues. To each their own!

And that differs from Ford how? You throw a few more trinkets and comforts and rebadge it as a Lincoln.

you've described the BMW 335i engine. did you mean to bring that up or did you get confused regarding the SHO engine? The latter is a V6 with 365hp.

I would regard the conservative tuning of the 335i motor as "to make it like a BMW". the peanut gallery will of course respone with "you mean slow, like all bmws, right?". No, i mean they like broad flat torque curves and linear horsepower gain, with very fast throttle response. That's been difficult to acheive with turbocharging, and BMW hasn't sold a gasoline turbocharged engine since the E23 745i back in the early 1980s -- until now.

fwiw, a basic reflash + exhaust gets you 400hp on a 335 engine. the Turbos and wastegates are integral to the exhaust manifolds, and its all crammed into a very small spot. Not sure of anyone doing big or single turbos on the 335, but i haven't looked.

The reason the taurus is so slow has got to be down to its weight, and perhaps driveline inefficiency. But i'm guessing weight. the 0-60 time of that thing is awful given how much power it has [and that it is allegedly AWD]. It's braking, skidpad, and slalom all suck, also indicative of high weight.
