My bosses wife has a 2005 baja with lil over 50K miles on it. About 2 weeks ago it started acting up when you turn corners, its starts hopping and makes noise. Kind of like trying to make a really sharp turn with a truck in 4wd. Does not act up going straight or small turns. Checked all the cv's and there good, kind of confused now. No local shops have any idea either and the dealer would give me any help. any ideas since there are some many local subaru people?

i have replaced a couple diffs in the rear on some subaru's for axle problems and making weird noises

check diffs. Drain fluid, look at contents, replace with a better fluid if no visible damage.

we changed the diff fluid about 3K miles ago as normal maintenance. What would you guys suggest for brand or kind of diff lube?

amsoil sevre gear. you can get it at fleet farm. make sure to check the center diff. if its a manual all the fluid is together, if its auto they are seperate. if its auto you dont need to drain the transmission for this problem. but if you do, you need to use special trans fluid from subaru, not any regular atf will do.

to me the problem sounds like a diff issue.
maybe the transfer clutch on the center diff is bad.

...did you make sure you put in the right kind? I don't much about the subaru diffs, but I think they have some kind of Viscous or Helical LSD no?

I filled the car with fluids recommended by the owners manual. Did some testing yesterday, there is a awd fuse spot in the under hood fuse center, had no fuse in it, and found in the internet that if you install a fuse it puts the car in fwd mode. Well after installing the fuse, the ad light turns on in the gauge cluster and test driving it shows no problem, so that at least narrows it down.

Its probably the center diff then. $$$$$$$$$

fun, well i will pull it apart eventually. Shes just going to drive in in fwd mode only for the time being until I know enough of what to do to fix the center diff.

                          is it auto or manual?

if its auto its a seperate unit (easier to replace) i do believe. If its manual its inside the transmission and from what I hear, just replace the whole unit.
