i have got a buddie who has got a 94 talon he just bought and it like spun the timing belt so it has like not teeth on the belt left. he said that he was just sitting at a stop light at idle and it dyed but i was just wondering if when that happens if it causes some of the valves to bend or what problems it will cause if any?

i love lays ;) ponys are dog food :D

The belt usually doesn't rip teeth off unless there's something that is locking up.

fix it before all the valves need to be replaced. Find out why it caused it to rip the teath off in the process.

Most of the time on a dsm the teeth get ripped because something is causing way too much drag on the belt. Most cases it is the oil pump. They are notorious for having low oil pressure when the mileage gets high, mostly caused by owners not changing the oil every 2k miles like they are suppose to and becoming a hell of a drag on the system due to worn parts.

My suggestion is that if you own a dsm, and your belt broke, get a used engine.....this is coming from experience. get a used one, replace both the oil pump, water pump, and the belts along with all the seals, then reinstall into the motor. The thing will run top notch afterwards, if done properly that is.

if the timing belt skipped notches your most likely DID bend valves. unless there was divine intervention or something.

bad idea. how do you know that the used replacement motor hasn't been treated even worse? there's no guarantee with so many moving parts, buying someone else's used car/engine/tranny/etc is buying someone else's problems. i would just put work into the engine already in the car

I would just sell the car to me for cheap since the motor is probably f'ed and you probably don't want to deal with it!

1st....Owning a used dsm = IT HAS BEEN TREATED LIKE SHIT IN THE PAST!!!!!!!!!

2nd...Most used engines come with some kind of a warrenty, which is why I suggest replacing most of the critical things while it is out in the open. When the engine is removed from a vehicle and is in known working order, they usually check compression too, mainly because they dont want to send out a motor that may be running only on 3,5,7 cylinders.

3rd....This is from MY EXPERIENCE....both from owning a dsm and being a technician. They are a pain in the ass trying to fix when the valves have been bent....And there is always at LEAST 4 bent (intake and exhaust on 2 cylinders at once)

                            my .02 cents

i suppose neither one of us specified where the used engine would be coming from...
if the head is the only thing damaged, just send it off to buscur, ffwd connection, turbotrix, fasterthanyou, etc and get something better back
keep in mind, this is IF the head is the only thing damaged. i would take it to someplace that knows the engine before i even think about keeping it (for reasons that ryan mentioned)
