Why do people do this?

There are some of us that know full well what can be done with american cars, even the FWD ones.Lame American FWD cars and lame Japanese FWD cars fall at the same speed (in a vacuum) when you push them off the edge of a cliff for being lame FWD cars.
Hopefully that satisfies everyone

ok, how about this for an analogy
Give 2 people a civic and a grand prix, give them $2000 dollars. Then make them do the drag, auto-x, and road course. BUT, must have 4 people with 500lbs of luggage along and there is 500 miles between tracks.
See, most normal people dont buy shitbox hondas because they actually plan on having a life and friends. This takes a vehicle that is not only cheap, and quick enough, but can seat 4 and their luggage ocmfortably on a road trip. Now like i said, for the people that do hidious visual mods, there is literally no excuse and its a disgrace, just like a tasteless ricer.

See this is why I like E36 BMWs. You can buy a pretty decent 325i for 4-8k, do some preventative maintenance (t-stat, water pump) put a little bit into performance (m3 cams w/tuned chip, intake/exhaust, fan delete, plugs), rims/tires for handling, and you have a nice RWD DD w/around 200whp that will last you a long time. Just slap some winter tires on when it gets cold and you're set.
Or if you spent a little more you could upgrade to a nice 328i/high mileage M3.
Edit: Plus the I6 sounds great.

I just wanna put this out there and into perspective for everyone. For $1000 you can put a volvo into the 13's extremely easily. Making a car fast doesn't make it cool , even though I love Volvos. I'm just saying that even though your so called unique Grand Prix is decently fast, It's still ugly, and I can do the same thing to my grocery getter Volvo wagon.

Like I said, people get different cars for different reasons. My regal I purchased not to be a sports car, but to be a car that I could drive all year round comfortably that wasn't a bore to drive. So what if I spend a little time and money on it to make it faster.

Yeah for sure, I actually think you're regal is cool cuz thats way different than anything else. I'm just saying that the pontiacs are ugly as expletive.

This is the dumbest arguement about cars ever.Apple to oranges,
You are trying to compare specific cars in specific situations that only the car you are biased to.
"Lets compare X car to a Y, in a catagory that favors X car only"
This is beyond stupid, and all of the import nutswingers are closing their ears and not accepting that you can affordably mod another fwd american car.
People buy different cars for different reasons than YOU did.
Bunch of fucking idiots.
Well well, someone needs a tampon.
Yes, it is a dumb arguement but it is the arguement that is being brought up in this thread. I was trying to throw out different types of racing to imply that it had to be all around built for speed, handling, and be able to last. As was said, you could do turbo/tune/suspension on the civic for 2k ish, but in the end it will probably lose in the auto-x because of the turbo as was hinted at by ka-t.
How does reliability, drag racing, and auto-x only favor one type of car. That is a stupid fucking comment.
When did I ever say that I was leaning towards the import winning the competition. I believe I said something along the lines of I don't know which one would win...talk about closing you ears and not being accepting of something.
Yes, people do buy different cars for different reasons, but this thread is about a specific reason, not about driving to school/work/gettin groceries. I've got a 2004 sentra to do that with. This thread is about performance.
And as far as being an idiot, like I said....tampon.

What...if you want to have a car for getting groceries that you want to mod?
Also, what if you rather have a car with a comfortable ride than would ride on rails?
There are specific cars for specific situations.
No tampon neaded anymore.

Not to get anyones panities in a twist here, this is another one of those never ending arguments, what one person likes is not always what the other likes. For example you may think your girl is hot as hell, someone else may think she is ugly as S*it.
In my case, i needed a car, of all the choices in my price range this was the closest to what i wanted, as for the rims and body kit, those came later, the car was in a hit and run less than a week after i bought it. so i decided to fix it myself, and get the headlights and bumper out of the junk yard and use the insurance money to buy the body kit and rims. all in all i liked it so it really didnt bother me what others thought. :icon_salut: -
People mod these cars because they want to. I want to add some power to my SSEi because I want to, simple as that. You can drive cirles around me if you want, I'll be happy in my shitty handling boat...

The topic was why do people do this not how retarded are these guys for thinking FWD US cars can go fast. There are some damn good reasons to buy one of those cars, the Grand Prix in particular. They ride nice, are super reliable, can fit four or five adults comfortably along with their shit, and still rip off some 14 second passes for pretty cheap. Granted they are not the best the US has to offer in terms of build quality, i.e. lots of plastic on the interior, but at least it has an interior. Every civic I have ever been in has a dash, seats, carpet, and thats it, the shifter comes out of the floor. I think we can all agree that both cars are reliable, and some of the other cars mentioned are pretty good as well, it really comes down to what you want. I will defend the Grand Prix to the end, very nice cars that are decently sporty and cheap as well as reliable. Oh and BTW anyone who thinks a Civic looks better than a Grand Prix needs to have their eyes checked.

I think we can all agree that most hondas are more reliable then most pontiacs, but pontiacs are more roomy and whatnot. And I think civics look way better than grand prixs, but grand prixs aren't hideous compared to many other cars.

Drove 1500 miles in the course of 30 hours and I felt as comfortable at the end as when I got into the car. So why does everyone make this argument?? If we all had to haul lots of people around we would buy minivans lol. And for the looks thing who really cares in the end its all personal preference.

Pontiacs are ok, until you need to replace you IM gaskets. Or start having ABS issues. The tranny in my bonneville started slipping bad at 103k miles, and like 98k miles of that was driven by my dad who was 40+ yrs old. And i was no worse than an average teenager about driving it. Otherwise it ran good, but that tranny is garbage. I have beat the hell out of many hondas with 150k+ miles on them and only had one problem when a D15 got low on oil.

How did your honda get low on oil normal engines don't have consumption issues. I've owned hondas and they all burn oil. 3 motors and 3 sets of CV shafts later I sold my honda I think I'd rather own a 4G63....Um, bad valve seals on a motor with 190k miles on it that was beat to hell. I drove the shit out of it waiting for it to blow and rarely checked the oil.
