Not a bad upgrade if you wanted to stay NA. But as far as price goes you could get a vg30dett and do a few nice mods and make WAY more power than a VQ. What would be the price of the vg30dett swap? What would the estimated horsepower be with the few mods?

IMO, the only upside to the VQ is that it is a lot lighter. Thats it. It doesn't make as much power as the VG30DETT out of the box...so its worthless to me.

The VQ35 is a pricey swap even staying NA thanks to NATS and VTC. along with it being a newer engine. If you wanted to do a VQ swap and turbo it I would go with a VQ30. It would be a far easier and cheaper swap. A completely stock VQ30 can handle 450-500hp. Another good thing about the VQ is the 6speed.

You can find a VG30dett for around a grand. The jdm ones on ebay are a little more but there is nothing different about them (other than smaller turbos). 6 spd? Realy not needed unless your gonna roadrace or something. More time shifting less time spooling. I'm not saying the VQ is a bad engine just in something like this it wouldn't be worth it. By the time you drop the compression and turbo it your gonna be in deep cashwise. The VG's are pretty strong and can take 600 HP with stock internals. From what I've read the VQ will take 400-450. And It won't even fit under my hood without hacking a hole in it.

yes, you could do that....but then you would have no engine room whatsoever...

You say that as if you'd have a whole bunch more with a VQ. Who cares if theres more room. Does extra room in the bay make your car faster? Filling it with a snail or two and some charge pipe does.

well, not only does it mean hardly any engine room...but, means that itd be a pain in the ass to work on, and would cost a shitload of money to put in a STOCK engine, rather than have that money go for modifications to the original VG30E. I think people who do the engine swaps do it more for the "wow" factor than power...because If you spent 10K on a VG30DETT swap for a STOCK engine, you could have a pretty badass VG30ET for that. However, If I could, a VG30DETT would be sweet, if it didnt cost so damn much for it, all comes down to pricing.

Holy fuck 10K your kidding right? Yes it is a stock engine, that is built to take boost. VG30DE's are gonna run you about the same exact price and you will have to build it to handle boost. Snag up a ZTT motor and tranny for about 1500$ and start from there.

well, 10K was an example, and I do agree. Im only saying that its not really worth it in my opinion, you have a Z32 so you can agree with the limited engine space and if you really wanna do some hardcore modifications the engine needs to come out....more than once.

I wouldn't mind doing a boosted VQ swap after learning a little more about it today. But I think I'm still going to stick with my VG30DETT.

Also, a complete VG30DETT is roughly 1500 on osaka.

yep, the engine is....but really does depend on how you do all the fabricating and stuff.

                            wouldn't the VG30DETT be a direct swap into a z31?

not anywhere close my friend...lots of modifications needed to the engine bay...its the transmission that I believe is a direct fit.
