Hey guys, looking to replace my tired stock VF40 in the near future. When I went stage 2 I checked the turbo - I didn't have any radial play, but I had almost 1/8th of axial play in the shaft (via my calibrated feel-o-meter). I've heard this isn't too abnormal, but I'd really rather avoid having the thing fail on the car and contaminate all the oil/lines/cooler/etc. Car has just about 80k on it now and it's fairly common for them to be on the way out at this point.

I'm not really interested in another VF40, for reliability reasons, and why not upgrade right?

    For reference, my current setup:
2005 Legacy GT Wagon, 5MT Tranny
Stock clutch, replaced when I bought it less than 5k ago
    Stock intake, inlet, TB hose
    Invidia UP
    CNT Catted DP
    Stock Cat-back

This my daily driver, so I want to stay reasonable. Here's the leading scenario right now:

    BNR EVO III 16g Hybrid
    AVO TMIC
    Grimmspeed EBCS
    Modded Stock Inejctors (~800+cc/min)
    Deatschwerks DW65c Fuel Pump
Custom Tune on AP - 91 and E85 Maps - (Nuke or Shamar)

    Expecting 280-310awhp on gas, 300-330 on E85.

    Thoughts? Missing anything? TIA!

An 1/8" of axial play is quite a bit IMO.

Thanks Dave, so far I don't think there's any rubbing on the compressor cover, but I'd rather not get to that point. 🙂

One week till I can start buying. There are a couple sets of Deatschwerks 850cc sidefeeds for sale on the forums, might do that instead of modding mine. Any shops in town do injector cleaning?

Any of you subie guys modded your fuel pump assembly for the Walbro 255? Not sure I have the patience to wait till mid Jan for the DW drop-in. Also, when the turbo's off I'll have easy access to the EGT sensor - delete?

I'm running a pair of Walbro 255 injectors in my WRX. When I had just a single 255 I ran off an unmodified stock hanger. I had to modify it slightly to strap the 2nd pump to it however.

No reason to delete the EGT in my opinion.

Bought a VF40 core and had it shipped to BNR this week. Got dibs on a set of DW850s in the quad cities, looking at a couple TMIC options in the classifieds, and getting a quote from Infamous for the rest.

Still haven't decided when exactly I'm gonna get it done, not like I need the power over the winter... But then again, the sooner the old turbo's out the better.

                    Thanks, but I'm looking for a bolt-in 05-09 LGT/08+ WRX style TMIC.

Not even sure what it would take to adapt for flanged turbo outlet & recirc. Show me it can be done cheaply and maybe we can work something out.

Ah, no problem. Yeah, if I was doing that I'd go FMIC anyway 🙂

Bought the Walbro today, thanks Tintmasters!

Found a deal on a TMIC, AVO it is... Pick it up on the 11th in the cities.

Injectors came today, and the guys at United said some of the diesel shops in town might be the place to go for a thorough cleaning - I'll have to check that out. Flow sheet looks good, all between 847 and 850cc.

Got a shipment notice and tracking number from BNR, my EVO3 16G is on it's way! Now I just hope it survives the madness that is UPS during the holidays...

Still holding onto hope that the DW65c's will be out sooner than later, I'd rather not have to modify the fuel pickup assembly if I don't have to...

Not much better than getting new parts in the mail.

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!
