Watching a drag race is like watching paint dry. And in terms of participation, once you do a track drag race once there is really no point in racing again. Not all of us have time or money to do modifications each season. Autocrosses are more fun because there is an instrinsic driver value that drag races lack. Any joe with a car can autocross, and could potentially beat a better or newer car. In a drag race, sometimes a better car launching in third gear could smoke the car beside him.

And then there is the factor outside this point. People get jobs, have classes, develop relationships, whatever -- sometimes they don't have time for this stuff anymore. Or sometimes they just grow up or out of cars.

And they are quickly replaced by a new enthusiastic group of kids just entering the scene.

With that being said, I know I struck a nerve when I stated what I see as a problem with the scene in this imediate area. I'm not just trying to isolate and bash the shops. But I do FIRMLY believe that the shops have alot more control/influence than they think. I do think that we (the enthusiast) need to and can contribte as well. What I was getting at was that it would make a real difference if they combined their efforts along with maybe to bring in some autocross events, stereo comps, car shows, dyno days, and general get togethers. Heck even get some car clubs involved as well. Stuff like that is what (I) believe will get the scene started in the right direction.

an autocross in fargo would be awsome. just have to find a place to do it with a good size parking lot that isnt chip and sealed so we dont ruin cars or the parking lot

Uhm Drag-Racing if you participate is fun I would think, you choose different cars to line up against; you don't have to do it for times if you know how to drive... (or think you do) but to maybe just try and see how well you can beat a car, or how well you can keep up, or even go up against a car that is close to yours in speed.
You don't go once, and go hmm.. guess thats what my car can do, I can't do any better. Or else people who play sports like Golf would go once, and be like welp, this is the best I can do unless I get better clubs (better clubs being like in reference to a mod on a car)
As for spectating, it's kind nice to see what people can run with their cars, when you see cars that should be hitting high 13s/14s and they are running 15s you chuckle, when you see a EVO or STi hitting low 12s, you wonder what he's got done.. I was at Cedar Falls and I think I had just about as much fun watching as running my car. but that may not go for everyone.

Where to start...... I'm just gonna tell it like I see it.

First off, in my opinion THE BIGGEST problem with this car scene here, is people and their fucking egos. This isn't true for everyone, but a pretty good majority of the people around here that are into cars and shit, are waaaaaaaay too big headed. I don't think I've ever seen as many arrogant assholes in my life, as I have when I moved here and have been dealing with it for the last 3 years. Everyone thinks they are so much better than everyone else because of what they have, or what they have done. Everyone thinks they are a fucking god, and they're not. So people need to get off their high horse and come back down to the real world.

Another one of the things that I think hurts the scene, is how parts always take sooooo long to get. I've had a few bad experiences trying to get parts and shit taking a long time, and that really makes me not even want to buy something. I don't want to go and spend my $5000 on something and not get it until a year later, that's just bad business. And yes I have had that exact scenario happen. So vendors need to get their shit together and make parts move faster.

If you local businesses want more local business (which is obviously the point of the thread), then you're probably going to have to spend some money on advertising locally. If people don't know you're there, or what you do, then you're never going to get their business.

All these reasons for the scene going downhill from everyone and here I thought it was all my fault cuz I like whiskey, whew, I can sleep well tonight.... You know what? I don't care that the opinion is that the scene is going downhill around here to be honest. I've always been into cars and I always will be. I don't need a scene to justify it and I know a majority of you feel the same way. So screw it. You want the scene to come back alive? Most people need to stop caring what the hell else everyone thinks about what they are doing and just do what they love and want to do with their cars. I read a lot about how big egos play into whatever around here. Deal with it, it sucks but big egos are everywhere no matter where you are or what you are doing. That isn't what is "killing" the scene. It should fuel the scene through competativeness if nothing else. Same thing as when you were kids, if Billy could jump 3 feet, you wanted to be able to jump 4. What I guess I see this year is a real lack of organization if nothing else. Years before there were hot spots were everyone would just get together before a cruise or just sit and BS. Now that a few jackasses ruined most of the places for everyone we just gotta get reorganized again. There are a few on this board who have put forth some great effort in trying to make this happen. I definetly am not one of them but I do appreciate the effort they have and are putting in greatly. As far as why aren't as many people going all out on mods or whatever as much as they used to? Gas is 3 bucks a gallon, wages haven't gone up to match, and a whole lot of other philisophical bullshit composed in a neat and orderly matter could be put together to explain that. The scenes ok people, it's just laying low. As long as there are people that love cars it's just fine. We just maybe need to kick it in the ass once in awhile to get it going again that's all.

                  One time...

Bitch and wine. Oh and Krazydrifter.....nevermind... I do not have the energy for another 10 pages of worthless wasted bandwidth.

Egos indeed. But if nothing else, you would think that maybe the only thing holding your little scene together. Without arogant fucks like yourselves, myself included :D, you would not have a scene at all. All you would have is a bunch of hippies holding hands across America hugging trees in there off time. Get over it. With out competition and rivalry you really have no means of judegment. Sure some will argue but just shedding a little light on another perspective.

Obviously this holds true for a 75% of the people the other 25% lie and say they made there car faster and look nicer or "modded" in other words for themselves. Tell me who drops $1500 on a pair of wheels and says "I did it for myself." If thats the case you should find a cheaper hobby to make yourself happy about yourself.

Ok so my point was well pointless but I just thought I could stir the fire.

                        Time trials for 3 hours

Then heads up for the rest of the day

                        bikes vs bikes 9.00-10.00 10.01-11.00 11.01-12.99

                        11.01-12.00 $20.00

                        16.01- higher $10.00

The sponsor could give out cash for the 1st place of each group ( must be 10 or more cars per group..?? I know its not alot of money but its enough money for gas you wasted.

I agree. Just think if they did that on regular weekend as well, just have a street class where they break it up like that, would be awesome. Instead of racing some 19 second grand am that gets the same exact time each run, we would be racing cars which are close to our own. I would definately be more apt to go out and race. With Street Legal days, it is definately fun to just go out and make runs. But, it would add to it to have a shootout type deal like you are saying. This way we would maybe have the people that say it is only worth drag racing once coming out for the competition.

Yes, we already discussed this the other day remember? just trying to figure out the final details of how to lay it out. Rock Falls sets up brackets exactly like this, but we as a shop were going to try offer some sort of payout/prize to each class winner.

We'll have a thread started once all the details are figured out. But i think we may have to cut the car count minimum down as 10 cars/class i dont think is doable for every class.

I had plans on doing more to my car (turbo & paint possilby shave door handles) but I know priorities have changed where my money is going... paying off current bills get a truck and house... truck will be to haul remodeling house project material's... i'm single income person so it's gonna be fix up an older house or buy an unfinished house and finish it myself...

another thing not as many rich kids in fargo area that mommy & daddy throw money at to try to get the kid to forgive them for never being around....

So, why don't you guys just meet up wherever you feel like it? call people and tell them to come out. It's so easy. For instance, I know of several weekly meetings at various locales around the cities. I have the option of going out to car gatherings at least 3 times a week, more if I were to search or care. The activites vary from having half off apetizers at applebums or "hot racing action" or cruising/sitting watching cars at porky's, and so forth.

don't be sad because something isn't happening, get people's numbers and have them come out. i'll show you how it's done when I get there late august. Have no fear!

edit: stop talking about what your dad did or bought. that's gay.
